Wynnum Manly v Sandgate-Redcliffe

Men’s First Grade Round 2 - KFCT20 Max Game 4

29 August 2022 6.30pm at Ian Healy Oval

Teams arrived to a “locked-up” facility at Norths campus. A few wires had gotten crossed, but eventually keys were found and the game was on! ….and it was a cracker! With both team in the proverbial “cellar”, pride was the only thing at stake. Neither team disappointed. Wynnum won the toss and elected to bowl first under lights to avoid the possibly dewy conditions later in the evening.

Sandgate got off to a rollicking start with openers, Jack Cooper and Rory Livingstone finding boundaries to advance the score to 25 from the first three overs. Sukhveer Singh struck first for Wynnum, removing Cooper via a good catch in the deep by Nick King. There was no respite for Wynnum however, as Livingstone and Matt Schubert clubbed four 4s and as many 6s in a dominant 69 run partnership for the 2nd wicket. The partnership was broken when Nick King had Schubert caught by Daniel Solway at the end of the 11th over to make it 2/96. Livingstone departed two overs later when Sam Hatherell took the edge for Ali Nasar to complete. From that point wickets fell regularly with Liam Guthrie picking up two and King, Seymour and Foulkes picking up one each. Sandgate finished with a sound 8/173 from 20 overs.

A couple of wickets early left Wynnum with a lot to do at 2/22! Seymour and Solway managed 26 from 24 for the 3rd wicket before both fell in the space of 6 balls, leaving Wynnum 4/55 at the 8 over mark. Zac Foulkes then took over. Smashing a six from his second ball, Foulkes stayed belligerent throughout the innings. Foulkes’ 50 came from 27 balls in the 15th over. Grayson Jones provided support in a partnership of 34 from 21 for the 6th wicket and Liam Guthrie did likewise in a 45 run 8th wicket partnership. At the end of the 16th, Wynnum needed an unlikely 54 from the final four overs. Foulkes blitzed the 17th, taking 18 runs from it and reducing the equation to 36 from 18. A disastrous 18th over reduced Wynnum to 9/142; Chad Soper claiming wickets from the 3rd, 4th and 5th balls for a hat trick! 32 required from 12 balls. 15 from the next advanced Foulkes to 91 and left 17 to get from the last. A dot from the first ball of the last - 17 from 5. A no ball next then a boundary from the free hit - Foulkes 95; 12 to get from 4. A wide; beating the keeper and down to the boundary; 5 runs - 7 to get from 4. A dot!😬. 7 from 3. Two to Foulkes - 97; 5 from 2. A boundary! 101 to Foulkes; scores level. All the fielders in. Lofted into the outfield…safe. A win by 1 wicket from the last ball of the innings!!! Foulkes 102 from 52 balls.

An absolute nail-biter. Well done to both teams!
