Lanning XII v Perry XII

CA Lanning v Perry Series U19 Female

Game 2 - 3 September 2022 at Geoff Dymock Oval

After the morning match was abandoned due to - guess what? - rain, the Lanning v Perry Series (for U19 Females) got under way at 1.30pm at the National Cricket Campus. Conditions were diabolical in the early stages with wind and and rain (albeit drizzly), playing havoc. Notwithstanding, a full T20 was played.

By agreement, the Perry XII batted first with a pair of Claires (Moore and McGuirk) from NSW opening the batting. South Australia’s Maggie Clark struck the first blow for the Lanning XII in the 4th over, disturbing Claire McGuirk’s stumps with the score on 13. Perry XII skipper, Ella Heyward then joined Moore in a 33 run, 2nd wicket partnership. Disciplined bowling restricted the scoring to singles and the occasional two, before Heyward broke the shackles for a boundary and a 3 in the 11th over. However, in the very next over, WA’s Poppy Stockwell got under a lofted shot off the bowling of Ananaya Sharma to end Heyward’s innings; 2/45. A run-a-ball partnership of 18 between Moore and SA’s Paris Hall, was broken in the 15th over (Charis Bekker’s second); an excellent catch taken overhead by Lanning XII skipper, Amy Smith. Hall and new partner, Zoe Samuel from Victoria added 28 from 26 in the closing overs before QLD’s Lucy Hamilton chimed in with the wicket of Samuel in the penultimate over. Another classy catch by Amy Smith off her own bowling removed Hall in the last.

The target was 93 and Victoria’s Olivia Henry looked like she wanted to get them all; blasting boundaries in each of the opening overs and facing all but three of the first 18 balls. 29 came from from the first five overs. Then, in the last over of the power play, Perry XII skipper, Ella Heyward, claimed her opposing skipper, Smith, caught by NSW’s Jade Allen in the outfield - the first of three very good catches by Allen in the innings. Heyward nabbed a second wicket two overs later when Paris Hall took the edge, to make it 2/41. Aided by a burgeoning sundries tally (30 all up for the innings), the run rate remained healthy as the Lanning XII moved to 2/61 in the 11th. Then, the proverbial wheels fell off! Lanning XII lost 6/30 in 19 minutes, including Henry for a well made 31. Emmerson Filsell started the rot, claiming QLD’s Sianna Ginger in the 11th. Jade Allen took a couple of catches, Allen and Aanliya Cheeran both enticed batters out of their crease adding to Hall’s tally of dismissals with the gloves and Zoe Samuel also picked up a couple of wickets to reduce the Lanning XII to 8/81. Just when it seemed the tide had turned in favour of the Perry XII, a freak deflection from the keeper attempting to stop a run off a wide, cannoned into a helmet on the ground for a 7 run turn-around. Another couple of wides in the over took the score to within two of the target. Lucy Hamilton and Maggie Clark, secured the win for the Lanning side in the 17th over. The team continued on to record 9/111 from 20.

The final match is at the same venue on Sunday 4 September. 9.00am start.
