South Brisbane v Wynnum Manly

Men’s First Grade Round 2 - KFCT20 Max Game 2

28 August 2022 9.30am at Norman Gray Oval

Wynnum won the toss and elected to bowl at Norman Gray Oval. Ben Cutting was grassed in the first over and went on to make Wynnum pay dearly for that error. Cutting and opening partner Dylan Hunter blasted 93 from 54 balls in a brutal assault on the Wynnum attack. Nine sixes came in the first nine overs before Cutting’s attempt to dispatch Grayson Jones over the Boundary was intercepted by Sam Hatherell at the end of the 9th over. Aryan Jain joined Hunter and cleverly rotated the strike to allow Hunter to continue the onslaught. After a second wicket partnership of 79, it was Jones again who claimed Hunter, caught by Daniel Solway, three short of a century. Jones got in the act again, taking an excellent running catch off Sukhveer Singh to end Faber’s innings on the first ball of the last over, but this just brought Stirling McAvoy to the crease to blast 21 from the final five balls and take Souths to an imposing 220.

Losing wickets in “clumps” has been a thorn in Wynnum’s side throughout the tournament. Two wickets to Harmon Sandhu in the third over continued the trend. Corey Hunter and James Seymour steadied the ship in a 3rd wicket partnership of 29 from 32. Seymour’s dismissal with the score on 52 sent Hunter into action. He blasted 31 from his next 12 before getting an edge through to Claye Beams off PNG’s Damien Ravu with the score on 84. Four overs later 3/84 had turned into 7/124. Cutting, James Rosewarne and Harmon Sandhu each taking wickets courtesy of catches by skipper Gurinder Sandhu who took four in the innings. Sukhveer Singh and Ali Nasar provided late order cameos to take Wynnum to 176 - a creditable score on a “normal” day, but 44 runs short on this day!
