Valley v Wynnum Manly

Men’s First Grade Round 5 - One Day

24 September 2022 9.30am at Peter Easton Oval

A few clouds but an otherwise fine day at Peter Easton Oval. Valley skipper, Josh Neill, won the toss and elected to field.

Tight bowling by Jack Wildermuth and Donal Whyte, supported by excellent fielding restricted the Wynnum openers, Corey Hunter and Nick King, to just 20 in the first 10 overs. Disaster struck when Benji Floros entered the attack and claimed wickets in each of his first three overs. Nick King (caught by Brock MacLachlan), Ali Nasar (Bowled) and Corey Hunter (caught at fine leg by Jack Beath), all found themselves back in the shed by the end of the 14th, with just 31 on the board. Cameron Boyce then claimed Jed Wilson and Grayson Jones within his first three overs and Wynnum were 5/47 with 21 gone. Suhkveer Singh and Ruben Burger then set about a remarkable rescue mission in a 25 over partnership. The pair grafted early to post a 50 partnership in 102 balls, but took just 49 balls for the next 50. Burger brought up a maiden first grade 50 with a six over long on. Wildermuth picked up both Burger and Singh in his return to the crease in the dying overs. Wynnum had posted 7/169; a modest total but a good recovery from where they were.

Valley were ruthless in the chase. Jack Beath and Flynn Thomasson added 39 from 25 for the opening stand and when Beath holed out to Josh Fraser off Cameron Steinhardt’s first ball, Hugh Weibgen joined Thomasson for 22 from 24 for the second wicket. Thomasson was brilliantly caught on the long off boundary by a diving Nick King off Steinhardt in the 9th over, but at that point the score was already 61. Weibgen and Wildermuth polished off the remaining 112 runs in a partnership of 122 balls; both posting half centuries along the way.

Next week sees the start of the 2 day season at Bill Albury Oval v Sunshine Coast.
