Western Power v Bayside Pirates
BPL02 - U18s
19 September 2002 2:00pm
at Ivor Marsden Memorial Complex - Field 2
The Power moved to Field 2 to take on the Bayside Pirates in the second of their Day One encounters. With both teams beaten in their opening games, only one would be going home with a win in the ledger. A dry outfield and a flat wicket was a recipe for a high-scoring game. Western Power won the toss and elected to field first.
The Pirates exploded out of the blocks notching 50 without loss in just 5.4 overs. Ashton Muir was looking dangerous on 30 from 19 when Lucas Sefont got under one at long on off the bowling of Jack Geldard to make it 1/52 in the 7th. Geldard was involved again an over later when he was the catcher to remove Muir’s opening partner Nevill off the bowling of Aum Thanki; 2/62. From that point, it was all Pirates. Xabian McKay-Mavin and Lachlan Mair dominated in a 60-ball, 92-run partnership. McKay-Mavin’s innings began with 11 consecutive singles before it started raining sixes - six of them - to take him to a sparkling 54 from 32 balls and his dismissal from the very next ball; Regan Liebke taking the catch off the last ball of over 18 by Tom Stevenson. Mair was out next ball - the first of Geldard’s last over - Stevenson taking the catch, then Sefont picked up his second catch from the very next ball to make it a team hat-trick for the Power. The flurry of wickets reduced a potential 180 to 163; still a formidable total.
In contrast to the Pirates, the Power’s top order capitulated to be 5/51 after 8 overs. Needing 113 from 72 balls, it was again Aum Thanki and Jared Adamski who set about the task. A partnership of 62 from just 39 balls reduced the task to 51 from the last six overs before Aum found Dan O’Connor on the boundary and was out for 35 from just 22 balls. Adamski had picked up where he left off in Game 1. He massaged the ball around the field before launching into action in a 21-run 18th over which took him past 50 for the second time in the day and the total to within 9 runs of the target. The 50 partnership between Adamski and Regan Liebke came up in the 20th over just before the target was overhauled with two balls to spare.
A first-up win for the Power.
