University of Queensland v Wynnum Manly

Men’s First Grade Round 1 - KFCT20 Max Game 3

21 August 2022 1.30pm at Ken Mackay Oval

With both teams suffering two losses for the weekend, there was heaps of motivation to come out on top and come away with a win on Sunday at Ken Mackay Oval. Bucking a trend, University chose to bat first on winning the toss.

Uni openers, Jano Coetzee and Angus Lovell started solidly taking 26 from the power play and going on to a 49 run partnership before Sahal Khatree had Coetzee caught by Grayson Jones in the 8th over. 20 runs came from the “power surge” taken at the start of the 11th over, but Lovell fell just two balls in, edging to Ali Nasar off Rob Fitzgerald, seven short of a 50. Nick Larkin blasted 16 from 11 balls then fell via a cut into the hands of Fitzgerald at backward point off Jones. With five overs to go, Uni had laid a solid platform at 3/110. Despite the wicket of Bryce Street and a Run Out (both by Fitzgerald), 72 runs came from the final 30 balls including a devastating 41 from 11 balls by Matt Willans. Willans blasted five sixes including three in a final over blitz of 26 which took the score to 182.

Nick Hobson and Daniel Solway attacked the target with enthusiasm, taking the score to 50 from the first six overs. Solway was out a few balls later when he found the towering form of Matt Willans on the boundary. Corey Hunter joined Hobson in a 31 run partnership over the next four overs. Hunter fell just four balls into the first power surge over. From that point the innings momentum stalled. Wynnum lost Hobson for a well made 51 in over 13 and then a further four wickets in the next 23 balls; collapsing to 7/112. Ali Nasar and Rob Fitzgerald added a run-a-ball 21 at the end of the innings; Wynnum falling 49 runs short.
