Redlands v Wynnum Manly

Men’s First Grade Round 2 - KFCT20 Max Game 1

27 August 2022 1.30pm at Peter Burge Oval

The picturesque Peter Burge Oval was the venue for the KFCT20 Max Round 2 clash between Wynnum Manly and Redlands. There were a few clouds around, but an otherwise fine day and Redlands skipper, Leigh Drennan, having won the toss, decided to bat.

A massive breakthrough for Wynnum just four balls in when Sam Heazlett sliced Liam Guthrie in the air into the waiting hands of Sam Hatherell on the third man boundary. In the very next over, Liam Smith, played exactly the same shot off Hatherell and was caught in exactly the same spot by Liam Guthrie. James Bazley blasted five boundaries in a 13-ball 22, but perished trying to smash Zac Foulkes over long on; Nick Hobson taking a well-judged catch. Conor McInerney and Mitch Owen had added 32 before Owen lofted James Seymour to the cover boundary and was brilliantly caught by Daniel Solway. McInerney clubbed 19 off his next 8 deliveries, but came undone on 42 when Ali Nasar got under a top edge off the bowling of Seymour. The innings was at a crossroads at 5/98 from 12 overs. Redlands skipper, Leigh Drennan, batted cleverly with the lower order; running aggressively between wickets and picking up the occasional boundary to guide his team to a competitive 161. James Seymour and Zac Foulkes picked up three wickets each. The latter bowling well at the death to pick up the prize wicket of Drennan in the final over.

The chase began disastrously for Wynnum Manly when Nick Hobson was run out without facing a ball by a brilliant bit of fielding by Michael Nicol, just three balls into the innings. Bad got worse when Hunter was bowled from the last ball of the first over. Worse got even “worser” five balls later when Jones was out first ball; 3/14 off 2! Then, 5/31 from six when Nick King and James Seymour fell in the space of 7 balls. A 36 run 6th wicket partnership between Daniel Solway and Zac Foulkes provided a glimmer of hope which was all but extinguished when three wickets fell in the space of 11 balls in overs 12 and 13. Solway batted on valiantly for 39 adding 25 with Ali Nasar for the 9th wicket. Nasar and Sam Hatherell frustrated the Redlands attack adding 28 from 16 balls for the 10th wicket before Hatherell who had the distinction of hitting the only six of the Wynnum innings, missed one from Jasper Sumner a couple of balls into the final over with Wynnum 34 runs short. Redlands’ Mitch Owen picked up four wickets on the day.
