The Southport School
Clyde Veivers Memorial Shield
A sunny day, a lovely breeze, a beautiful day for cricket and the annual Clyde Veivers Memorial Shield clash at The Southport School.
Wanderers started well with a partnership of 71 between old boy, Matthew Grant and Raghav Goel. Just before drinks, TSS skipper, Lachlan Crump, held onto one at slip off the bowling of Louis Chabert to dismiss Goel and just after drinks; James Kleinschmidt was adjudged LBW to Liam O’Connor.
Jack Doyle then joined Grant, the pair adding 47 for the third wicket, before Doyle became the first of Tom Gossett’s victims via another catch to Crump.
The first of two partnerships between MJ Toolis and Grant was an undefeated 31 taking Wanderers to second drinks and the retirement of Grant with the score on 162.
From that point, it was a procession. In a 14 over period, seven wickets fell for 49 runs; Tom Gossett picking up 4/15 from his last five overs to finish with 5/45.
Retiree, Grant, rejoined a defiant Toolis to add 17 from the last 10 balls of the innings and drag Wanderers up to 228 from their 50 overs.
Despite an initial setback, TSS got off to a flyer with Judd Markham particularly brutal taking 18 off the 3rd over and 14 off the 8th and Lachlan Crump chiming in with 15 off the 5th.
With 71 already on the board, Matthew Grant was introduced in the 9th over and immediately picked up the wicket of Crump.
Grant and Doyle, worked well in tandem until drinks reducing the run rate from an amazing nine an over to just over six by drinks.
There was a collective sigh of relief for Wanderers in the first over after drinks when Markham was well caught by Byron Gale, on the boundary, off Jack Doyle. A return catch to Grant, three overs later, made it 4/113, leaving Louis Chabert and Jack Dwyer to consolidate in a patient 27 run 5th wicket partnership over the next nine overs.
Tight bowling by Marcus Zipf and Josh Durkin reduced the run rate, leading to some risky running between wickets and the eventual demise of Jack Dwyer via a Jack Doyle direct hit in the 30th over.
The 43-run, 6th wicket partnership between Louis Chabert and Nick Williams took TSS to drinks and then accelerated after drinks until Jack Doyle intervened again, throwing accurately to Frederick Lee Watts for the run out of Williams. Less than an over later, Watts was on hand again, diving to his right to dismiss the new batsman off the bowling of Kleinschmidt.
The glimmer of hope felt by Wanderers at 7/188, was snuffed out by a dominant Louis Chabert, bringing up 50 and smashing 45 off his last 19 deliveries to steer TSS home in the 42nd over.
Post match, Patrick Carty and TSS coach Steve Baker paid respects to Clyde Veivers and Lew Cooper who were both passionate supporters of Wanderers and TSS.
A very enjoyable day. Thank you to all.
