South Brisbane v Redlands - 2nd Grade

Allan Pettigrew Shield 2020/21

Round 14

12 & 19 December 2020

Peter Burge Oval

It was bizarro world at Wellington Point. A summer’s day in the low 20s, the complete opposite of the stinking hot conditions last weekend. The rain that threatened to wash out the whole day eased by the end of the morning and because of an excellent playing surface, a start was possible at 12.40pm; Tea to be taken at 3.00pm.

Trent Pearce won the toss and elected to bowl. Opening bowlers Dominic Coote and Joe Rangiah settled onto a perfect length immediately. An edge off Coote into the gloves of Matthew Taviani from the second ball was an ominous sign for Redlands and when Rangiah trapped the other opener in front it was 2/2 in the 4th over.

The only partnership to promise anything ended on the last ball of Matt Casey’s first over when the batsman tried to cut a ball that was too full and chopped on. A few overs later, an Aaron Joby throw to Brandon Honeybrook found the batsman short of his ground and when Taviani and Coote combined again in the 14th over, Redlands were 5/29.

The Souths bowlers continued to apply pressure, not allowing anyone to settle. Matt Casey was especially miserly in an amazing spell of 14-8-3-8. It was a Casey LBW which finally put a partnership of 6 from 54 balls out of its misery and an edge off Casey to Pearce at slip 6 overs later reduced Redlands to 7/42.

Rangiah picked up his second wicket two balls later when a short ball was pulled straight to Joby at mid-wicket and his third from a full ball scooped up to the same man in the same position a couple of overs after that. With Redlands 9fa, the option to extend the session for 30 minutes was taken.

The innings ended in the 36th over when Rangiah pouched a tricky one off his own bowling from a mistimed slog that went straight up. Redlands all out 51.

Tea was taken and play resumed at 3.35pm. Although rain intervened for a short time, 15.5 overs were possible before the final downpour came at around 4.50pm. In the meantime, the Redlands total was overtaken and a first innings win secured.

A good day’s cricket in half a day!
