South Brisbane v Western Suburbs - 2nd Grade
Allan Pettigrew Shield 2021/22
Round 2
11 September 2021 at Graceville Memorial Park 1
Eerily, the round 2 match at Wests was almost a complete reverse of the previous week's encounter with Wynnum.
Team 1 (Wynnum/Souths) batted first, got bogged down, had to chase runs late in the innings, came undone and posted a sub-par score. Team 2 (Souths/Wests), boosted by a big top-order partnership, prevailed to take the points.
The differences? Souths bowling attack applied strong pressure early in the chase, which continued to push the required run-rate up. As a result Wests needed nearly all of their 50 overs to chase down the 175 target compared with Souths a week ago, who swamped a target of 199 with 15 to spare.
Souths will rue a couple of missed chances late in the innings which could've had two new batsmen at the crease, chasing an awkward 20 or so off as many balls.
Arlen Wells-Peris' blinder at short cover off Matt Casey was a highlight. As were the miserly spells by Brendan James, Toby Sawyer-Brown and Smit Mehta.
Sandgate at Norman Gray next Saturday.
