South Brisbane v Wynnum Manly - 2nd Grade
Allan Pettigrew Shield 2021/22
Round 1
4 September 2021 at Norman Gray Oval
Wynnum won the toss and elected to bat in overcast conditions at Norman Gray Oval.
Brendan James and Toby Sawyer Brown began beautifully, restricting Wynnum to just 25 from the first 10 overs. The introduction of Smit Mehta in the 11th over provided no relief for Wynnum as they hobbled to drinks at 0/41 from 19 overs. The first wicket finally came in the 27th over when Harry Jones held onto one off Skipper, Matt Casey with the score on 91. Six overs later, Casey picked up his second and two balls after that, an Aaron Joby throw to Matthew Taviani resulted in a run-out to make it 3/122 in the 34th over.
With wickets in hand, Wynnum started taking risks leading to another run-out from the arm of Casey in the 41st over.
Then, at 4/165, the Magpies struck four times in 15 balls via a Joby catch off Golding, two stumpings in an over by Taviani, off Pearce and a McNae special which scattered the stumps. Despite the slow start, Wynnum posted a respectable 196.
Well, it seemed respectable! Joby and Liam O’Hare had other thoughts and treated the bowling with disdain in a 162 run, 172 ball, 2nd wicket partnership which broke the back of the run-chase in just over 35 overs.
Yes, it was a shame that Joby fell on 99, but there are worse things than making 99 in the first game of the season!
Well done lads!
