South Brisbane v Sandgate/Redcliffe - 2nd Grade

Allan Pettigrew Shield 2021/22

Round 3

18 September 2021 at Norman Gray Oval

A third lost toss by skipper, Matt Casey, had Souths batting first at Norman Gray Oval. Although the run rate to drinks at 18 overs, was just under 4, it came at the cost of three top order wickets. In contrast, the next session was dominated by a  run-a-ball, 118 run partnership between Trent Pearce and Arlen Wells-Peris. In the end, a mix-up between wickets saw Wells-Peris tragically run out with score on 189 with 12 overs to go.

Pearce pushed on to record a stylish ton before he fell with 6 overs to go and the score on 233. Late order hitting by Casey (47) dragged the total, up to an imposing 278 from the full 50 overs.

Apart from one early wicket to Toby Sawyer-Brown in the 3rd over, early wayward bowling allowed Sandgate to rocket to 83 in the 15th over. Casey's breakthrough at the end of the 15th, was just what the doctor ordered. However, the run rate was still well over five an over, when Smit Mehta enticed the batsman from his crease to be stumped by Matthew Taviani from the first ball of the 23rd over. Three balls later, the new batsman left one that he shouldn't and it was 4fa.

Casey and Mehta then turned the screws pushing the required run rate up until the batsman lifted his foot just a smidgeon from a Casey delivery and was punished by smart stumping by Taviani; 5/141.

The 6th wicket partnership took Sandgate to drinks at 5/180, but, just 4 balls after drinks, Brendan James found a way through the batsman's defences to make it 6fa.

From there, runs became harder to come by for Sandgate and risks had to be taken. An attempted second run to Aaron Joby became a run out in the 40th over, a top edge was pouched by Casey off Wells-Peris in the 43rd  and a good running catch in the deep by substitute fieldsman, Dylan Crees, off Pearce in the 46th over reduced Sandgate to 9/229.

The final wicket was able to add 20 runs before the overs ran out, but this was still 29 runs short of the Souths total.

The win was good enough for a top 4 finish and a place in the one-day quarter finals.
