BPL 2021 U19 Women
20 - 23 September 2021
GAME 1: v Southern Rockets
20 September 2021; 11.00am at Marchant Park 5
A 2nd wicket partnership of 67 from 63 balls between Ruby Strange and Isabel Goffage had the Rockets well on the way to a big total, before the Power bowling put the brakes on in the middle stages. Some late power hitting from Olivia Steel 34 (14) provided a much needed boost and a competitive total of 141.
Boosted by a whopping 25 wides and a 76-run opening stand between Annie Wikman and Emma Jackson, the Power looked to have the target in their sites, but wickets tumbled in the second half of the innings. The Power lost 8/61 in the last 11 overs (including 3 run-outs) falling 4 runs short of the target.
GAME 2: v Moreton Magic
20 September 2021; 2.00pm at Marchant Park 5
A sparkling 83 from 52 balls by Emma Jackson was the anchor for some cracking partnerships for the Power. Annie Wikman was the partner for the opening 41 from 29, Abby Harris for the second wicket 41 from 24 and Meghan McCartney for the 4th wicket 60 from 41. As a result an imposing 174 was set for the Magic to chase.
A 54 run opening stand was a good start for the Magic, but three wickets to Sarah Walker in consecutive overs, slowed the Magic down just enough to push the target out of reach. A 27 run victory for the Power.
GAME 3: v Darling Dingoes
21 September 2021; 11.00am at Marchant Park 10
In Queensland, there are days that are perfect for cricket; this was not one of them. Howling winds kicked up dust all over Marchant Park. Not surprisingly, apart from a 41 from Imogene Fisk-Walsh of the Dingoes, sundries was by far the top scorer in each team. The ball found the boundary via wides, byes or leg-byes on 7 occasions during the match.
There was some exciting cricket as well. The Dingoes innings progressed nicely via partnerships of 42 from 41 for the second wicket by Fisk-Walsh and Kira Holmes, then 32 for the 4th wicket by Fisk-Walsh and Olivia Winter. When Erin Moran (2/1) claimed both Fisk-Walsh and Winter in her one and only over, it brought Lauryn Anderson and Lauren Taylor together for an undefeated 43 from the final 5.3 overs; taking the total to 147.
In the chase, the Power blasted their way to 85 from the first ten overs, but lost 5 wickets in the process. Just 27 came from the next five and when Abby Harvey was out in the 15th, the equation was 36 from 32. Ashleigh Sims and Sarah Walker added 10 from the next 11 deliveries before Sarah fell. 26 from 21 needed. Some tight bowling restricted the scoring to five singles from the next 9 balls, so that with two overs to go, the Power were 20 in arrears. Then, a single to Sims followed by three boundaries in the 19th by Lucy Williams saw the equation reduced to 7 from the final 6 balls.
A wide from the first ball of the last…6 from 6. 👍 A single to Sims, a two to Williams….3 from 4. 👍 A DOT…. 3 from 3. 😕A single to Williams….2 from 2. 😳 A DOT….2 from 1. 😬 A swing by Sims…run…one….two…again… hesitation (what?)….RUN OUT…..A TIE!! A TIE!! 👏👏👏👏
GAME 4: v Coastal Marlins
21 September 2021; 2.00pm at Marchant Park 5
By the end of day two at Marchant Park, the wickets had become low and slow and batting difficult. The Power top order struggled to 40 from the first ten overs against the undefeated Marlins. Then, a rescue mission by Breanna Craven and Jamie-Lee Strang. The pair added 60 in the next 8 overs to guide the Power to 114; a total to defend.
The pitch was the same for the Marlins though and the Power rammed the point home with both Olivia Clark and Ashleigh Sims striking twice in the early overs to have the Marlins rattled at 4/8. It didn’t stop there. Olivia struck twice again in the 6th over to make it 6/25. The Charlottes, Briggs and Lutz, combined for a run-a-ball 23 run partnership for the 7th wicket, before an Emily Titmarsh throw brought about the end of the partnership in the 11th over. Sarah Walker and Meghan McCartney then mopped up the remaining batters to bring the innings to a close on 76 in the 15th over.
GAME 5: v Northern Kings
22 September 2021; 8.00am at Fred Kratzmann Oval
Marchant was cold enough on Tuesday, but 8.00am, Wednesday at Redlands was pretty close. The Power batters started well enough to get to 51 in the 9th over, but it was at the cost of three top order wickets. Breanna Craven and Jamie-Lee Strang stepped up once again in a brilliant 74-run, 4th wicket partnership from just 48 balls and when Breanna fell with 21 balls to go, Emily Titmarsh joined Jamie-Lee in an unbeaten 41-run partnership for the 5th wicket, propelling the Power to an imposing 160.
It was a good track and the Kings proved it. Carly Fuller and Lucinda Bourke put on 88 in a 52 ball opening stand and Lucinda went on to partner Eden Colden for 22 and Clodagh Ryall for 57 from 30 to steer the Kings home in just 16.1 overs; just short a bonus point.
GAME 6: Gold Coast Waveriders
22 September 2021; 2.00pm at Peter Burge Oval
The beautiful Peter Burge Oval was the location for the game 6 of the Power campaign. Chances of making the semis were slim after some other results went against the Power. The toil of the previous few days started to take its toll; the Power finding themselves reduced to 4/23 in the first 5 overs. Emily Titmarsh and Meghan McCartney dug in for 30 from the next 8 overs before another mini collapse left the Power with just three wickets in hand to negotiate the final five overs. Sarah Walker, Abby Harris and Macy Hauser were able to add 33 in those overs to set the Gold Coast a modest 92.
The Power worked hard in the field, keeping the Waveriders to just 44 from the first 10 overs. However, there were still 8 wickets in hand allowing the Gold Coast to accelerate in the second half and overhaul the total in the 17th over. Bizarrely, all five Gold Coast wickets fell LBW; Walker picking up two, Sims, Hauser and Hess one each.
