South Brisbane v Ipswich - 1st Grade
Sci-Fleet Motors First Grade 2021/22
Round 7
6 and 13 November 2021
Norman Gray Oval
DAY ONE:
On a day where teams batting first dominated in First Grade, Norman Gray oval was no exception. Unfortunately for the Magpies, it was Ipswich that won the toss and batted.
Ipswich skipper, Anthony Wilson promoted himself to opener and together with Bryn Llewellyn, advanced Ipswich to an ominous 83 without loss in the first hour. Wilson registered a 50 shortly after drinks, then an edge to Brandon Faber off Jamie Eccles saw his exit with the score on 99. Llewellyn went on to 66, but met a similar fate; edging to Faber off Brandon Honeybrook.
Harrison Wood and Daniel Wilson took Ipswich to lunch at 2/160 from 32 overs, but Wilson fell victim to Ben Cutting just three overs after the break; Logan Duval taking a good catch at point. Harrison was then joined by brother, Jack; the pair adding 71 from 78 balls for the 3rd wicket. Harrison reached 50 just before drinks, but the drinks break did nothing for Jack who was out in the over after the break; another catch to Faber off Honeybrook. James Rosewarne, in the middle of a marathon 18 over spell, was rewarded for his toil with the wicket of top-scorer, Harrison Wood who smacked one to mid-wicket only to find Logan Duval who took another good catch, six overs before Tea.
The 44-run 6th wicket partnership, met its end via Faber’s 4th catch of the day; a second wicket to Rosewarne. The message carried by the new batsman must’ve been “swing” as Harry Austin and Rowan Lutter bludgeoned 61 from 69 balls. The new-ball was taken after 80.3 overs. Without the use of an injured Nic Golding, Jain tossed the ball to Saveen Nanayakkara and was rewarded with the wicket of Austin; caught on the boundary by Honeybrook. James Ward (subbing for Golding) took a skier at backward point and Gurinder Sandhu pouched one off a top edge right behind the keeper on the boundary to give Cutting his second and third wickets of the day and the declaration came at 9/380 with Souths to face an awkward 35 minutes at the end of the day.
All was Ok until the last ball of the 4th over, when Aryan Jain got an edge to slip and Logan Duval chopped on 6 balls later. Lucky Peterson and night watchman, James Roswewarne, saw out the last few overs; Souths 2/22 at the close.
DAY TWO:
A minute silence was observed at the start of play for the tragic passing of a Souths Junior during the week.
Michael Topp came into the Ipswich side to replace injured spinner Jack Wood and Aaron Joby came into the Souths team to replace Gurinder Sandhu who was on Shield duty for Queensland.
Souths resumed at 2/22 and Ipswich struck early, via Harrison Wood, when a Rosewarne pull shot found Sean Lutter in the fourth over of the day to make it 3/31. That would be the only joy for the visitors for almost two and half hours as Lucky Peterson and Jamie Eccles dug in to take Souths to lunch at 3/99, and then on to a stubborn 96 run partnership. Along the way, Peterson reached a half century off 133 balls. Eccles narrowly missed out on his 50 when he edged to the keeper off Sean Lutter in the 40th over of the day. “One brings Two” and in this case “three” as Ipswich opening bowlers Smith and Wood returned to claim wickets in successive overs just before drinks; Souths 6/137.
Aaron Joby joined Peterson and provided superb support in a two hour partnership which took Souths to Tea at 6/175, then saw Peterson to 100 in the 67th over of the day; Peterson’s second 50 coming from 82 balls. The pair continued to defy the hard-working Ipswich bowlers through the new ball and on to drinks, before Joby was unluckily run-out at the non-striker’s end, three balls after drinks; a Peterson drive deflected onto the stumps by Rowan Lutter in his follow-through; the partnership, 101 from 205 balls.
With 18 overs remaining, there was still work to do. Brandon Honeybrook, picked up where Joby left off, providing an excellent foil for Peterson. The 8th wicket partnership remained an undefeated 71 from 112 balls through to the end of play. Peterson’s 150 came from 291 balls at 4:45pm - about the same time of day he came to the wicket a week ago!. The last 20 minutes of the day, was a barrage of boundaries culminating in a Peterson maximum from the last ball of the day. Souths innings came to a close on 7/309; Peterson undefeated on 182 from 312 balls; 25 fours and 1 six.
Well done to Souths for a fighting innings. Congrats also to Ipswich who toiled manfully throughout the day.
