Warehouse v Logan Districts
Plunkett Cup 2019/20
17 November 2019 at Glenlogan Park, Jimboomba
Hot and Humid, turned into lightning at about 1.50, then a storm with the threat of hail, at about 2.00, but we were on again by 3.00 and completed the match in beautiful sunshine with a nice breeze.
No. It wasn’t Melbourne. it was Glenlogan Park at Jimboomba for the Plunkett cup clash between Warehouse and Logan. 😳😳
As is normal, Michael Turner lost the toss and Warehouse was relegated to the field in oppressive conditions. An initial 5 over burst for 32 runs by Logan was brought to a halt by Sandeep Singh Dhaliwal trapping the opener in front. Luis Romero Hermida got into the action next over drawing the other opener into a shot with Sahan Wijayasekara accepting the catch behind.
In his next over Luis, scattered the stumps and then took two more wickets in his following over; Turner taking a tumbling catch AT SLIP and Sabah Syed plucking a sharp one out of the air also AT SLIP two balls later; Logan were 5 fa off just 11 overs.
Connor Scurr nabbed his first Warehouse Rep wicket in the 15th over and Smit Mehta was on a hat-trick in the 22nd over when a catch lobbed to Turner at slip from a mistimed shot and the incoming batsman was caught behind by Sahan next ball.
At 8/89, things were looking rosy for Warehouse, but a couple of fighting partnerships for the 9th and 10th wicket took Logan to a surprising 181 in 39.5 of their allotted 50 overs. Charith Anthony snuck one through to break the 53-run 9th wicket partnership and Connor Scurr’s re-introduction brought the fall of the final wicket when the batsman chipped one to Seb Wheeler at short mid-wicket.
After lunch, Sahan and Smit set about the chase with energy taking the score to 53 without loss from 10 overs before the lightning came. With the umpires directing that noone take the field due to player safety, the covers were not able to be applied. Both teams watched as the heavens opened and the rain poured onto the ground in a 20 minute downpour (luckily no hail).
The umpires inspected the ground at 2.30 and declared that play could recommence at 3.00 with the match reduced to 42 overs and a D/L revised target of 161. Warehouse needed 108 from 189 balls.
Smit and Sahan resumed where they left off, adding a further 48 runs to their partnership and running beautifully between wickets, before Sahan was finally out caught at mid-on forcing the pace with the score on 101 from 132 balls. Ben Howard then partnered Smit for 48 from 52 balls, before sacrificing his wicket in the search for the bonus point. Sandeep and Smit brought the game home, reaching the target within the 34 overs required for the bonus point. Well done lads!
