Wanderers v All Saints Anglican School

12 November 2019

All Saints Anglican School Merrimac

All Saints Anglican School played host to the Wanderers on a clear Gold Coast day and a lovely oval nestled between school buildings. Nick Pepper and Byron Gale seemed content to stay at the crease and enjoy the conditions in a slowish 38 run opening stand. The bowling remained tight until drinks, then Pepper and Lewis Robinson put the foot down to take 53 from the next 10 overs before Pepper was out in the 27th. This brought Paddy Cotter to the crease and the associated fireworks. 108 runs were added in the next 12.5 overs; Paddy scoring 74 of these in partnership with Robinson (31) and then Palam Singh (77). Wickets then fell quickly and in bizarre fashion. James Girolami and Matthew Williamson, were both dismissed off the back of the bat; James attempting a ramp!

Old boys, Zane Beattie and Campbell Glaves played a couple of valuable cameos taking Wanderers to 272 from 50 overs.

All Saints also found the going tough early against some accurate bowling by veterans Kyle Coleman and Troy Robbins. Skipper, Jai Kurt and opener, Justin Leonard, stuck it out for a solid 63-run 2nd wicket partnership; Justin falling on the stroke of drinks and Jai a few overs later. Jake Nairn and Xabian McKay-Marvin added 31 for the 4th to take ASAS to 102, then a collapse of 8/73 with old boys Beattie (1) and Glaves (3) playing their part in the collapse. Paddy Cotter picked up a couple of slick stumpings and Glaves a very sharp C&B. Gale and Robinson also took catches. There was a run out (I didn’t catch the fieldsman - please let me know)

The “Gonzo” cup will be an annual event between Wanderers and All Saints. For all Wanderers and potential Wanderers players, make sure you have this event on your calendar. Great hospitality and a picturesque ground.

Thanks to all for participating. For our “English” contingent, it does get hotter!!
