Northern Suburbs v Wynnum Manly Gold

Veterans Over 40s Round 1

25 June 2023 at Ian Healy Oval

A gorgeous winter day greeted the players at Ian Healy Oval. Greg Maher won the toss and elected to bat. An initial two was greeted with enthusiasm, but that was the last of those for a while as the batsmen settled into a pattern of boundary or single. Apart from wickets to Monley and Hermida in overs 4 and 5, the bat dominated through to a drinks score of 2/93 thanks to a 50 partnership between Clinton Keble and Brad Townsend. After drinks, it was mainly the ball in charge. Wickets fell in the 20th (Keble for a well-made 45) and 23rd. Townsend reached 50 and retirement at the start of an eventful 28th over. Monley went on to claim two wickets in the same over and Hansen another, 4 balls later and all of a sudden, 4/149 was 7/150. It was hard work from then on for Norths, all out for 168 in the 35th. Sunil Sood and Dale Hansen picked up two wickets each and Andrew Monley finished with 3/23. Ryan Poole picked up four dismissals with the gloves and Broad two catches.

In the chase, Norths opening bowlers Jordan Buckley and Paul Keller applied pressure early, restricting Wynnum to 30 from the first 9 overs. Dale Hansen then broke the shackles taking 38 from his next 23 balls to bring up his 50 (and retirement) in the 15th over in a partnership of 77 with Ryan Broad. Justin Poole wasted no time clubbing a boundary from his first ball then four of them in an over just before drinks. After drinks, Broad joined in, smashing three sixes and a four in an over to take the score to 122 in the 18th. The score was 14 from the target when Poole retired (50 from 26) in the 23rd after a 78 run partnership from 49 balls with Broad. Broad fell a couple of overs later on 47; the target reeled in from 27.1 overs.

A win by 8 wickets to Wynnum Gold.
