South Brisbane v Western Suburbs - 2nd Grade

Allan Pettigrew Shield 2021/22

One Day QF

26 September 2021 at Norman Gray Oval

Four in a row (lost tosses) to Matt Casey. Anyone know what the club record is for this?😁 Souths started off well with Aaron Joby and Dylan Crees putting on 60 for the first wicket before Crees edged one in the 14th over. Liam O'Hare joined Joby for a 53-run 2nd wicket partnership, but from there, Souths lost 6/39 to be 7/152 with 9 overs to go. Arlen Wells-Peris and Matthew Taviani added a valuable 25 for the 8th wicket before Taviani was dismissed by a "hanger" at short mid-wicket. The eventual total was 189 which did not really seem to be enough.

The Souths attack was up to the task though. Brendan James beat the bat consistently and in the third over seemed to have the skipper caught behind brilliantly by a diving Taviani, but, the umpire was unmoved.

A fired-up McNae went on to claim wickets in the 7th and 11th overs courtesy of catches by Wells-Peris and Trent Pearce reducing Wests to 2/32.

Matt Casey's 10 over spell produced wickets in the 19th, 23rd and 29th overs; Taviani taking a fine catch, standing up, to remove the Wests skipper (3/63), Wells-Peris taking his second (4/82) and Harry Jones, a well-judged outfield catch to make it 5/102.

With 88 to get and just 5 wickets in hand, Souths were buoyant and when Wells-Peris grabbed an LBW in the 35th, the number of believers grew. Just over three overs later, a brilliant catch by Casey off Wells-Peris dismissed the half-century maker and Wests were 7/136. A 22-run 8th wicket partnership ended with a spectacular catch by Joby on the boundary off Trent Pearce.

It was 8/158. Wests needed 32 from 29 to win.

Then 31 from 24 and a brilliant 47th over by McNae and it was 30 off 18. Six off the next over from Pearce; 24 from 12.

The rest is too painful to recount. Suffice to say that Wests were successful off the last ball of the match.😬😬
