Wynnum Manly v Bayside Pirates
Men’s First Grade Trial Match - 100 format
Sunday 31 July 2022 at Ian Droney Oval
There was a little sprinkle just prior to play, but despite overcast conditions a full match was played.
The BPL “Century” format was employed:
Five ball overs with option of 10 continuous balls.
20 Ball Powerplay with minimum one continuous 10 ball over
Bowling ends changed after 20 balls.
Free hits from both wides and no balls.
Wynnum “won” the toss and elected to bat. Corey Hunter and Jed Wilson managed 15 from the first 13 balls before Brandon Honeybrook snuck one through Wilson to take the top of off. Grayson Jones then joined Hunter for a sparkling partnership of 55 from 25 balls which included four 4s and four 6s. A Honeybrook catch at long on brought about the end of Jones for 29 and a mini collapse for Wynnum. Three wickets fell in 10 balls as Lachlan Bragg and Aryan Jain (2) picked up wickets including the important one of Hunter for 41. Wynnum 4/75 at the half-way mark.
Suhkveer Singh and Matt Crampton consolidated for Wynnum and then accelerated to 39 from 25 before Bragg once again interrupted to remove Crampton via a sharp chance to Clay Beams standing up to the stumps. Continuing, Bragg picked up Jackson Plumb in similar fashion just six balls later to reduce Wynnum to 6/116. Wynnum then exploded to add 57 from the last 22 balls from the bats of Sukhveer (34/22), Rob Fitzgerald (29/6) and Sahal Khatree (20/6). Lachlan Bragg added one more to his tally for a creditable 4/27 from his 20 balls.
The target of 174 was a formidable one for the Pirates and was made even moreso after an initial maiden at blistering pace by Sam Hatherall. Then, two balls into Rob Fitzgerald’s first over, Kendall Fleming attempted to launch one over long off only to find the safe hands of Grayson Jones. Pirates 1/1. Isaiah Snell and Lucky Peterson consolidated briefly but were only able to add another 14 when Sukhveer Singh got through Snell to make it 2/15 after 28 balls. Wickets to Khatree from a Crampton catch at ball 47 and Steinhardt via a second catch to Jones at ball 55 left Pirates with an enormous task of 125 from 45.
The disciplined bowling by Wynnum continued with wickets from balls 72 (Jones), 78 (Khatree) and 88 (Monley) and despite 26 from 22 by Lucky Peterson and an 18 ball 31 from Mitchell Pascoe at the end of the innings, Pirates could only reach 7/107 from their allocated 100 balls.
A win to Wynnum by 66 runs.
