Warehouse v Ipswich
Webb Shield 2020/21
8 November 2020 at Paul Jackson Oval, Dakabin
Rain delayed the start of play for about 10 minutes and a chilly South-Easterly blew for most of a pretty dreary day, but, the cricket was exciting.
Ipswich won the toss and batted, which seemed like a good decision with the openers posting a 50 partnership within the first 11 overs.
The introduction of Elijah Rafter and Stevo Rees brought a change in fortune. Rees removed both openers, Pat Moulton hanging onto one for the first and the stumps disturbed for the second. Rafter chimed in with the next two, trapping one in front and bowling the other. 0/62 had become 4/83 in the space of 9 overs.
Rafter’s 2/18 from 8 inspired Rees to bring on spin from both ends to great success. Smit Mehta and Charith Anthony not only restricted the scoring, but cleaned up the remainder of the innings in a combined spell of 6/28. Sahan Wijayasekara picked up a couple of stumpings, Rees two catches at gully and Ben Howard a catch at cover. Ipswich all out for 111 from just 34.3 of the allotted 50.
Warehouse began the chase with just over an hour before the scheduled lunch break. At one point, the “scheduled lunch break” was under threat as Warehouse sank to 6/25 from just 9 overs.
Gritty batting by Anthony coupled with Moulton’s stroke play took Warehouse to 52 before Anthony was adjudged LBW in the last over before lunch.
After Lunch, it looked like a different match. Skipper, Steve Rees partnered with Pat Moulton for an unbeaten 63 from 79 balls to guide Warehouse home in the 28th over; Moulton lofting over the long-off fence to bring up the winning runs.
