Macgregor Maestros v Wynnum Manly

Warehouse Winter 2021

Round 4 Saturday B1

22 May 2021 at Olivers Sporting Complex

Michael Strudwick won the toss and elected to bat. On a pitch, where anything can happen, Rich Carr and Matthew Taviani opened the innings confidently taking the score to 60 before both fell within the space of a couple of overs. "Anything" then happened! Macgregor could only manage 31 off the next 15 overs, for the loss of four further wickets.

At 6/91 with 10 overs to go, Abhijeet Mahoorkar and newcomer, Guriqbal Aulaqh added 27 from 33 balls in a vital 7th wicket partnership; Abhi going on to steer Macgregor to a defendable 139, with support from Amreen Kahlon, Rae Sharma and Greg Lightbody (striking at 200 at the end of the innings!)

The Macgregor bowling was impressive early. As usual, Razza struck early taking wickets in the 3rd and 9th overs with assistance from catches to Abhi at mid-off and Guriqbal at second slip.

The introduction of Guriqbal brought about a Wynnum collapse as wickets tumbled. Guriqbal picked up wickets in the 12th, 14th and 16th overs thanks to a Taviani stumping and catches to Matt Macdade and Lightbody. In between, MacDade was also on hand to effect a runout and Lightbody picked up an LBW to have Wynnum reeling at 7/42 at drinks.

After drinks, it's fair to say that the foot came off the throat. Some good running between wickets combined with lacklustre bowling and fielding allowed Wynnum back into the game via an impressive 71 run partnership for the 8th wicket.

Rich Carr finally broke through in the 34th over removing the half-century maker. Wynnum required 32 from the remaining 40 balls and looked in command despite having just 2 more wickets in hand. A critical Sharma maiden in the 35th over made the equation 28 from 30 and the screws turned just a little on Wynnum. Six off the next over and it was 22 from 24. Greg Lightbody re-introduced and a wicket from the last ball of his over; a catch to Dean Moloney. 19 from 18 required. One wicket remaining. Three off the next; 16 off 12. Lightbody again... in the air... a catch to Razza. All out for 124.

Got out of jail Maestros, but a win nonetheless. Well done lads. Back to MP1 next week.
