Warehouse v Ipswich
Webb Shield 2019/20
27 October 2019 at Baxter Oval
On a slow, flat Baxter Oval at the Ivor Marsden complex, it would’ve been nice to win the toss and bat, but, you don’t always get what you want so Warehouse found themselves in the field and on the wrong side of a 59 run opening partnership in 10 overs.
A good throw to Charlie Matthews by Smit Mehta brought about the runout to break the partnership and Charlie’s stumping off Elijah Rafter five overs later removed the half-century maker to have Ipswich 2/81.
Skipper Stevo Rees read the pitch conditions perfectly in a 7 over spell which saw three of the Ipswich batsman returned to the pavilion; 5/132.
However, the Ipswich batting was deep and the runs continued to flow. A 56 run partnership for the 6th wicket and 52 for the eighth extended the total well past 200 and if it wasn’t for some good catching on the boundary by Hayden Marks and Ben Howard, it might have been 300. As it was, the 280 total was formidable.
The chase began poorly with 4 wickets in the shed for just 32 runs. 48 from 49 balls for the 5th wicket between Matthews and Steven Cawood stabilized the innings and some excellent running between wickets down the order from James Smith in partnership with Sahan Wijayasekara and David Ih Humphrey took the total to some respectability. In the end, scoreboard pressure was too much and Warehouse were all out 78 runs short.
As always, some good lessons to take back to clubs with a view to improvement.
