Warehouse v Ipswich
Webb Shield 2021/22
31 October 2021 at Ivor Marsden Memorial Park Oval 4
Overnight rain resulted in a damp outfield delaying the start of the match by 30 minutes, however, no overs were lost. Ipswich skipper, Lachlan Vellacott, won the toss and chose to bat first.
Ipswich openers, Chris Wilson and Alex Welsh, took full advantage of the power play; Wilson hitting out and Welsh rotating the strike. Welsh was out in the last over of the power play, with the score on 51, when a lofted shot off David Humphrey found the hands of Smit Mehta at cover. Vellacott joined Wilson for a run-a-ball, 33 run partnership which came to an end when Elliot Fuller got one through Vellacott’s defences a couple of overs before drinks.
After drinks, Brad Ilott’s introduction into the attack brought an immediate halt to the Ipswich momentum. The new batsman, Nick Verrenkamp, struggled to get off strike and a frustrated Wilson hit out only to be caught by Jonah Graham at deep mid-wicket. Just 10 runs were added in the next six overs before Ilott struck again to make it 4/108. When Matthew Robinson picked up a wicket in the 28th over, Warehouse had restricted Ipswich to 3/32 in the 11 overs after drinks.
A cautious Verrenkamp then teamed with Zach Fisher in a 55 run partnership which started slowly, then accelerated after the second drinks break. The partnership took Ipswich into the 43rd over, when Nick Turner pouched one off Fuller to remove Verrenkamp. A wicket to Turner himself, a few overs later, made it 194. Some very good running in the final overs between Fisher and Cody Dalziel, took the score to 214 from the allotted 50 overs.
The chase started badly for Warehouse. Ipswich bowlers, Michael Abbott, Craig Crack and Dean Granzien decimated the Warehouse top order in a combined spell of 5/33 in the 17 overs to drinks. James Smith and David Humphrey showed grit in a 32 run, 6th wicket partnership as did Fuller and Humphrey with 33 from 44 balls for the 8th wicket. Having come in at 5/22 in the 15th, Humphrey’s tenacious 41 came to a close in the 38th over with the score on 111. The Warehouse innings came to a close shortly after, 98 runs short of the Ipswich total.
A big congratulations to the Plunkett Cup squad for their victory v Sub-districts at Richard Ring Oval.
