Toombul v Wynnum Manly

Men’s First Grade Round 3 - One Day

10 September 2022 9.30am at Ken Mackay Oval

A light breeze took the edge off a warmish day at Oxenham Park; pretty much ideal conditions for the first of the season’s one day matches. Corey Hunter called correctly and decided to have a bowl, but in reality, there was no discernible advantage in pitch conditions for either team.

Toombul started sedately reaching 23 from the first 8. Then, a double strike by Josh Fraser in the 9th turned the game slightly in Wynnum’s favour. Former Test opener, Matt Renshaw batted well within himself, adding 109 with Jarryd Blake for the 3rd wicket and setting a solid base from which Toombul could launch. Renshaw was cautious at first; taking 74 balls to reach 50, then smashing 28 from his next 10 before being caught on the boundary by Jackson Plumb off Sahal Khatree. Blake brought up his 50 from 87 balls a few overs later and went on to register a 50 partnership with Glen Batticiotto. A sharp leg-side catch by Reuben Burger off Nick King saw Batticiotto head back to the clubhouse in the 41st over and a King catch off Jackson Plumb saw the end of Blake in the very next over. There was no respite for Wynnum. Preston White and Paddy Cotter were ruthless taking 41 off overs 46 and 47. White (and just about everyone at the ground) earned the ire of a gentleman whose car happened to be in the flight path of one of White’s “bombs”. Unfortunately, being informed that the club carried insurance was no consolation. White’s brutal 56 from 24 balls came to an end when Josh Fraser got under a top edge off Nick King in the 49th and Cameron Trask picked up a couple in the final over, but not before the score reached a formidable 297.

Disaster for Wynnum in the chase losing Corey Hunter at the end of the first over. Cameron Trask and Ali Nasar guided the score to 36 before Trask got an edge and was out in the 9th over. A fine partnership between Nasar and Grayson Jones righted the Wynnum ship. The pair added 91 over the next 20 overs. Nasar reached 50 from 89 balls but was out LBW just a few balls later when he stepped across and attempted to play one behind square. Jones was out just 4 balls later when Tom Balkin took the edge of his bat and Snell took the catch. King and Jackson Plumb added 35 from 39 before Preston White - who bowled beautifully throughout the innings - snuck one through King’s defences. The Toombul over rate was phenomenal and it was not until the 39th over that second drinks were taken. With 11 to go, Wynnum needed 118 to win. Plumb and Jed Wilson added 43 in just over six overs. Unfortunately, successive sixes by Plumb at the end of the 42nd was followed by his wicket two balls later. At the end of the 43rd, the requirement was 87 from 42. Wilson and Burger continued at better than a run-a-ball, but the pressure told. With every run vital, an attempted quick single, was the undoing of Wilson; Batticiotto swooping and throwing down the stumps. Sukhveer Singh added some excitement in the final overs taking 22 off 11 and steering Wynnum to a creditable 269.

A win to Toombul by 28 runs.
