Warehouse v Ipswich

Plunkett Cup Final 2019/20

2 February 2020 at Ray Walker Oval

In very oppressive conditions, Michael Turner won the toss and chose to bat.

An unsurprising slow and low wicket made it difficult to score; Warehouse struggling to 5/53 at the halfway mark. When a 6th wicket, 24 run partnership between Brett Nolan and Romero Hermida ended, the score was still only 69; with just over 21 overs remaining.

Mexican International (he told me to write that 😁), Luis, then combined with Charith Anthony in a critical partnership of 75 in 94 balls. Charith’s play behind the wicket on both on-side and off-side was a feature of the partnership as was Luis’ big hitting through cover and mid-wicket. Both players ran themselves ragged in the extreme heat. When Luis was finally dismissed in the 45th over, Charith was joined by a committed Connor Scurr who contributed a feisty 15 in a 38 run 8th wicket partnership to complete the innings. Warehouse finishing at 8/182 from a full 50 overs; the score and the complete set of overs an unlikely result from 6/69.

Play resumed at 1.40pm and there was immediate drama as a no-ball, a free hit and a dot was followed by the first wicket to Seb Wheeler; scattering the stumps. Two balls later, a lofted shot to mid-off was taken beautifully overhead by Mick Turner and Ipswich were 2/5 after 1 over. Three balls into the second over by Daniel Mitchell, some brilliant fielding by Brett Nolan and Nathan Brown brought about a run-out; 3/8.Some excellent bowling by Daniel was rewarded in the 6th over when the edge of the bat was found and Jacob Porter completed the catch behind the stumps.

Batting heroes Luis and Charith claimed the 5th and 6th wickets; Luis scattering the stumps in his first over and Charith nabbing a sharp C&B in the 20th over to reduce Ipswich to 6/74.

In the 27th over, the plan came together for Mitchell Munro as Luis enticed a lofted shot and Connor Scurr took a very good chance overhead at Mid-on. Then, an absolute seed by Luis to the new batsmen just two balls later saw the stumps smashed again and Ipswich were reeling at 8/99.

Nathan Brown was re-introduced from the other end the very next over and snavelled the 9th with the score still on 99; Jacob Porter picking up his second catch behind the stumps.

The 10th wicket was a little stubborn adding 12 runs in 5 overs before Connor took his second catch at Mid-on to hand Seb Wheeler his 3rd wicket.

An excellent bowling a fielding display by Warehouse and a 6th Plunkett cup victory. Well done lads.
