2016 Winter Macgregor Mongrels
Round 1 v Mater Hill
Saturday 30 April 2016 at D M Henderson (Upper)
On winning the toss, Mongrels skipper Matt Taviani decided to chase in the first match of the winter season. Paul Jonas validated that decision taking three wickets in an uninterrupted seven-over opening spell; Khaleel Waqar (2) and Tim Levitt assisting with catches. Daves Corrigan and Levitt provided excellent support from the other end, restricting Mater Hill to just 63 from the first 14 overs on the tiny DM Henderson Upper ground. Chidrup Shastri and Mian Waqar continued “the squeeze” picking up a wicket each (Abhi Mahoorkar taking a catch) to have Mater Hill 5/107 with 9 overs to go. A partnership of 44 from 34 balls between opener Grant Dunne and skipper Stew Seddon breathed life into the Mater Hill innings, but the return of Dave Corrigan put an end to that; Nabeel Khan taking the catch to dismiss Dunne on the “Devil’s Number”. The incoming Peter Fysh blasted three boundaries in four balls, but was out next over to a catch by Taviani off Levitt. Stew Seddon managed 12 from the remaining 14 balls to shepherd Mater Hill to 177 from the allotted 35 overs.
The target seemed modest for the “Upper” oval, but when openers Sabahat Mahmood and Umair Warraich were both dismissed in the first couple of overs, the target looked a long way away. However, Taviani was “on”.
Round 2 v Springwood Blue
Saturday 7 May 2016 at Homestead Park
Another resounding victory for the Mongrels on Saturday.
Some early wayward overs saw Springwood Blue get off to a flying start before Mian Waqar stemmed the flow of runs. A double wicket strike by Sunny in the 11th over provided the perfect opportunity for skipper Matthew Taviani to introduce Gary Buddha Sargent. From then on the run rate declined rapidly as Sarge and Sunny applied the screws. At the end of the innings they had 8 wickets between them, Sarge taking 5 and narrowly missing a hat trick.
A long list of catchers: Brent Cocker (2), Abhijeet Mahoorkar, Umair Iqbal Warraich, Malcolm Lochrie, Sunny, Kashif and a C&B to Sarge.
Springwood were reduced from 1/50 to all out for 97!
Adding to the efforts of Sunny and Sarge, Kashif bowled 7 overs for just 12 runs. Abhi and Umair also bowled a few very tidy overs. Some very good bowling depth for the Mongrels.
The chase was completed in 15 overs, Umair batting beautifully for 35no.
Well done lads... Tingalpa next week v Kuraby Lions on KP 7.
Round 3 v Kuraby Lions
14 May 2016 at Kianawah Park 7
Close, but no cigar for the Mongrels today. Sent in, there were good contributions through the batting order. Umair Iqbal Warraich and Naeem Khatree batted beautifully together, while Malcolm Lochrie and Tim James Levitt milked singles at the death to take the score to a solid 186.
In the field, the Mongrels applied pressure in the early stages to forces the run rate above 6 an over, but the Lions were able to pull out big overs when it mattered; pulling away in the later overs and reaching the total with 14 balls to spare. A couple of crucial catches found the grass, but not from the hands of Umair who took two including a blinder off his own bowling.
We're at KP 11 next week guys. Let's get back into the winners circle.
Round 5 v Pitch Doctors
Saturday 28 May 2016 at Kianawah Park 1
A resounding win for the Mongrels over Pitch Doctors today. Sent in to bat, the Mongrels were 1/92 at drinks and piled on 169 in the final 18 overs to amass a total of 261. A mammoth 191 run, 2nd wicket partnership between Umair Iqbal Warraich and Matthew Taviani came from just 151 balls; Umair bringing up his maiden Mongrels' century.
The fielding effort started well with an early wicket to Mian Waqar; Naeem Khatree taking a blinder in the deep. The gusty conditions were trying for both batsmen and bowlers. Gary Buddha Sargent managed to turn them to his advantage taking two in his second over - a catch to Malcolm Lochrie and a stumping to Matt Taviani - to reduce Pitch Doctors to 3/59.
The Doctors held on to be 3/81 at drinks. After drinks, a mix-up between the batsmen and great awareness by debutante Luke Taviani, brought about a run out with Naeem assisting. Just two overs later, Sarge brought up another double with a stumping to Naeem and a catch to a perfectly placed Dave Levitt at short mid-off.
At 6/118, the rest was made to look easy by some slick fielding. Sabahat Mahmood took a beauty at fine leg off Sunny, Luke Taviani, was once again, on the spot for a run out, Umair picked up an LBW and the innings was finally brought to a close by a superb catch in close to Matt Taviani off Umair... Partnering up again to close out the match.
Good work Mongrels.
Our first two-dayer next week at D M Henderson Upper v Mater Hill
Round 7 v Springwood Blue
Saturday 18 & 25 June 2016 at Kianawah Park 12
All over in a day for the Mongrels against a depleted Springwood Blue.
Mian Waqar and Dave Corrigan, in particular, were too much to handle for the Springwood youngsters. Sunny picked up five and Dave seven, in an awesome performance.
DC held onto a great reflex catch at leg gully. Sabahat Mahmood showed great composure to capitalise on a mixup between batsmen and effect a run out. Umair deflected one onto the stumps to catch a batsman out of his crease. Umair, Brent, Sunny, Malcolm Lochrie and Matthew Taviani picked up catches.
Well done lads. Next match starts 2 July against Kuraby Lions at DM Henderson Upper.
Round 8 v Kuraby Lions
2 and 9 July 2016 at D M Henderson Upper
DAY ONE:
A great team effort yesterday at D M Henderson by the mongrels, to get to a score of 306. There were good contributions right down the order.
After resisting frivolous appeals all day, our umpire unfortunately caved to a caught behind appeal from the last ball of the day, tragically, depriving Dave Corrigan of a memorable ton.
DAY TWO:
The Mongrels backed up a fine batting performance in week one, with a spirited bowling and fielding performance in week two.
Inexplicably, with 130 to get off 30 overs on DM upper, Kuraby Lions shut up shop and played for the draw.
Just 84 runs came in the 31 overs after tea.
Perhaps this was due to the outstanding bowling and fielding performance to that point.
Mian Waqar and Dave Corrigan bowled manfully sharing 37 overs for just 89 runs and 4 wickets. Dave Levitt, Nic Hammond and Gary Buddha Sargent also picked up wickets. Umair Iqbal Warraich fielded brilliantly at slip as did Malcolm Lochrie in all the positions his Captain had him. Matthew Taviani kept tidily and picked up a fine catch off an inside edge. Catches also to the two Daves, Sarge and a couple to Jakob Evelyn including one behind the stumps.
Well done everyone. This will still leave the Mongrels about 17 points clear at the top with two games remaining.
See you next week v Danger Island at KP6
Round 9 v Danger Island
16 and 23 July at Kianawah Park 6
DAY ONE:
Cold, wet and miserable conditions did not prevent the Mongrels from toppling Danger Island for 115. Some good outfield catching played its part. Umair Iqbal Warraich, Nabeel Khan, Sabahat Mahmood and Matthew Taviani taking catches to provide wickets for Gary Buddha Sargent. Ash taking a catch at deep point off Shiny.
The Mongrels were 2/62 in reply before play was called off at Tea.
DAY TWO:
Emphatic, Resounding, Convincing.. I'm not sure what to call a victory by an innings and 126 runs!
All the more remarkable in that only 35 overs were possible last week and just 40 were bowled today.
Sensational batting by Khaleel Waqar and Matthew Taviani , both completing memorable centuries and sharing a 173 run partnership off just 100 balls to steer the Mongrels to 5/318 in 39.4 overs.
The declaration provided a half hour of hostilities before drinks. The bowlers and fielders obliging to reduce Danger Island to 3/28. David Corrigan and Mian Waqar did not need to be changed wrapping up the innings in 14 overs; Dave taking seven, including 3 in one over.
Two centuries and a seven fa in one day... Pretty entertaining.
Round 10 v Pitch Doctors
30 July and 6 August 2016 at D M Henderson Upper
A winning end to the regular season for the Mongrels today with a hard fought First innings win over a determined Pitch Doctors.
The opposition fought hard to 105 without loss in pursuit of the Mongrels' 322.
Jakob Evelyn was the first to break through with the aid of good catches by Malcolm Lochrie at slip and Sanjeev Choudhary (subbing in for an injured Sarge) at mid on.
Shiny backed up his slips catch with a wicket from his second ball; a juggling catch by Matthew Taviani on the leg side standing up to the stumps. Shiny was in the action again a few overs later, at slip off Umair Iqbal Warraich 4/167.
The reintroduction of Dave Corrigan and Mian Waqar brought immediate success. DC took out off stump with his first delivery. Sunny did the same in the next over and the opposition were 6/186 at tea.
It was a repeat act a few overs after tea as Dave and Sunny took wickets in consecutive overs; Ash accepting a scoop to short mid wicket and Sunny's full toss chopped onto the stumps.
A bizarre hit wicket gave Dave his 3rd. The last wicket partnership was stubborn, lasting 14 overs, before Umair dragged the batsman out of his crease for Tav to complete the stumping. All out for 257.
Round 10 v Pitch Doctors
30 July and 6 August at D M Henderson Upper
A bat-a-thon at D M Henderson on Saturday. Short on openers, Nic Hammond stepped up and performed admirably in partnership with Umair Iqbal Warraich. The pair laid a solid platform of 88; Umair completing yet another 50.
A 94 run, 3rd wicket partnership from 107 balls between Matthew Taviani and Jakob Evelyn contained some excellent running between wickets as Jakob cleverly rotated the strike to a rampant Matt Taviani.
Matt reached 50, all in boundaries, from 38 balls; 100 from 96 balls and 150 in 130 balls, before finishing on 177 not out and declaring the innings closed at 322.
The Pitch Doctors survived the last half hour without loss to be 0/32 in reply. A total of 75 overs were bowled in a day, including an inning change. A creditable over rate.
