2014/15 Macgregor Mongrels Rounds

Round 1 v Mater Hill

20 and 27 September 2014 at Kianawah Park 9

DAY ONE:

Partnerships of 32, 30 and 36, for the top 3 wickets anchored by maiden 50 to Brent Cocker was a great start to the season for the Mongrels in the season opener v Mater Hill. From there, it was a little fragile, losing 7/49, but, Matt Windsor and Glenn Lee added 29 valuable runs for the 10th wicket to  guide the Mongrels to 176.

Mian (Sunny) Waqar and David Corrigan were very tight early, giving up just 28 in the first dozen overs; Sunny picking up a wicket second ball. Paul Jonas  and Mark Lyons picked up a couple each in their first couple of overs and Corrigan trapped the sixth wicket in front with the last ball of the day; Mater Hill 6/104.

DAY TWO:

It was hard work in the early stages of the day, as the Mater Hill lower order held out for 28 overs against the Mongrels attack. Mian Waqar finally broke through in the 53rd over and it was all over six overs later, Sunny taking the last three wickets to fall and securing the first innings points by 11 runs.

An undefeated 2nd wicket partnership of 150 from 160 balls between Michael Turner and Matthew Taviani took the Mongrels to a second innings 164 and a declaration! The Mongrels picked up two wickets in the remaining eight overs.

Round 2 v Wynnum Manly

4 and 11 October 2014 at Kianawah Park 7

An opening stand of 91 in just short of 20 overs between Brent Cocker and Michael Turner was a good platform for the Mongrels, but three wickets in three overs set the cause back a bit. In the middle order, Terry Presland, Mark Lyons and Glen Lee played great supporting roles to a rampant Naeem Khatree who blasted 102 from just 69 balls, guiding the mongrels to 6/246 from just 41 overs. A final wicket partnership between Matt Windsor and Mian Waqar added 28 from 28 balls to take the score to 276 with at least 20 overs to play in the day.

Mian Waqar and Tim Levitt bowled very tightly, supported by good Mongrels fielding. A bit of Brent Cocker brilliance brought about the first wicket in the 12th over, via a run out. it took just eight balls for Mark Lyons to pick up his first wicket in the 16th over and another run out in the dying stages by Michael Turner reduced Wynnum to 3/49.

A Matthew Windsor catch and an LBW in the same Mian Waqar over early on day two, had Wynnum reeling at 5/52, before a 47 run partnership between Trent Anderson and Thomas Seymour steadied the ship. With the score on 5/99, Sunny snuck one through Seymour’s defence and 18 balls later the innings was all over for Wynnum. Mark Lyons claiming two of the last three to finish with 3/21 from 5.3 and Sunny another to finish with 4/32 from 16 overs.

Skipper, Matthew Taviani, chose to bat again and joined Naeem Khatree in the first over after the shock loss of Michael Turner first ball ( a very rare occurrence). Taviani and Khatree were brutal, blasting 24 fours and 7 sixes in a 182-run partnership from just 90 balls. The declaration came at the end of 15 overs. The Mark Lyons/Mian Waqar nightmare continue for Wynnum when a Lyons catch off Waqar brought about the first wicket in the 3rd over. A Terry Presland run out in the 10th made it 2/24. Thomas Seymour once again proved to be a thorn in the Mongrels side compiling an impressive 55 from 57 balls, before Cocker enticed him out of his crease and Khatree whipped off the bails in the 18th over. From there, it was a procession with wickets falling in the 19th, 20th, 21st, 25th and 29th overs. Michael Turner grabbed an impressive 3/14 from 4 overs; all three wickets via catches to Brent Cocker!

A resounding outright victory by 220 runs for the Mongrels.

Round 3 v Macgregor Maestros

18 and 25 October 2014 at D M Henderson Upper

In a bizarre turn of events, two Macgregor sides found themselves in the same grade and even more bizarrely, Naeem Khatree was not permitted to play for the Mongrels.

Partnerships of 69 for the 3rd wicket between Gordon Mathison and Nick Clarke, then 44 for the 4th between Mathison and Tim Dippl laid a solid platform for the Maestros. A couple of quick wickets in the middle order gave the Mongrels a “quick look”, but Dippl then asserted himself dominating a 105 run partnership with a stubborn Boyle and reaching a well-deserved ton. Andrew Monley and Rae Sharma punished a tiring attack in a run-a-ball 62 at the end of the innings; Maestros posting a formidable 383. Mohammed Kashif, Dave Corrigan and Mian Waqar put in lion-hearted performances with the ball.

On Day Two, the Mongrels were in trouble early with Cocker and Taviani falling victim to a rampant Andrew Monley before Drinks. Michael Turner and Terry Presland combined well for the 3rd wicket, batting for nearly 30 overs and taking the Mongrels to 128 before Turner was out LBW to Monley for a well-made 73. From that point, the Mongrels crumbled, losing 7/56 (one player short) in 14 overs. Rae Sharma and Monley picked up four each in a dominant display.

A first innings loss for the Mongrels.

Round 4 v Griffith University

1 and 8 November 2014 at Kianawah Park 6

Griffith University got off to a rollicking start to be 1/79 from just 9 overs and capitalised on the start with a a run-a-ball 147 run partnership for the 3rd wicket between Ben Peardon and Rick Evans. Jacob Evelyn’s C&B brought Peardon’s innings to a close. His 125 from 97 balls included 9 sixes. A couple of quick wickets then brought Jordie Lawrence to the crease to join Evans in a 90 ball 113 for the 6th wicket. The declaration came at the end of 60 overs on 6/385; Evans remaining 112 not out from 158 balls.

In reply, Michael Turner and Brent Cocker negotiated the final overs of Day One without loss and took the Mongrels to 49 before Cocker fell. Michael Turner fell six overs later, bringing Jakob Evelyn to the wicket to join Matthew Taviani. The pair added 148 in partnership from the 25th to the 51st over. The 50 partnership came up from 76 balls and was followed next ball by Taviani’s 50 from 64 balls. The next 50 came up in just 40 balls. Taviani reached his ton off 97 balls and brought up the Mongrels 200 with a six in the 50th over. Six balls later, Evelyn brought up his 50 from 80 balls, but was out two balls later.

Taviani took his score from 107 to 140 in one unfortunate over (the 52nd) which included three no-balls, four sixes and a four and catapulted the Mongrels to 3/255. Unfortunately, the first ball of the next over claimed a wicket. Partnerships of 21 and 22 for the 5th and 6th wickets took the Mongrels to 298, before Taviani was finally out for 174 from 137 balls. With about 18 overs left in the day, the Mongrels needed 87 runs to secure first innings. Unfortunately it was not to be. A couple of big hitting cameos by Mian Waqar and Matt Windsor added 44 in partnership with “The Wall” - Paul Jonas - to take the score to 348, probably a lot closer than the opposition anticipated.

Round 5 v Underdogs

15 and 22 November 2014 at D M Henderson Upper

A sensational 181 not out by Michael Turner followed up with 3/8 from 5 overs for Mian Waqar put the Mongrels in a strong position at the end of Day One.

Resuming at 4/39 on Day Two, Underdogs fell prey to Dave Corrigan who took 11 for 89 on the day, 5 in the first innings and 6 in the second when Matthew Taviani enforced the follow-on. Corrigan was on a hat trick three times during the day and delivered a 6 over spell in the second innings which returned 5 wickets for just one run. A truly sensational performance bowling 20 overs on a searing hot day.

The Mongrels took just 13.2 overs to seal a first win. It took an amazing century by Anwer Olia and an undefeated 100-run tenth wicket partnership for Underdogs to hold on for the last 12 overs and deny the Mongrels an unlikely outright.

Round 6 v Mater Hill

Saturday 29 November 2014 at Kianawah Park 5

Vale Phil Hughes

In the first match of a double-header weekend, the Mongrels were sent in and could only muster 84 in just under 26 overs. Matthew Taviani and Terry Presland added 38 in a promising 5th wicket partnership, but were the only Mongrels to manage double figures. Mater Hill knocked off the runs in the 20th over, but not before Nabeel Khan nabbed three wickets in 10 balls in the 17th and 19th overs.

Round 7 v Wynnum Manly

Sunday 30 November 2014 at Kianawah Park 5

The Mongrels rebounded well today.

Wynnum batted well to set a target of 180. Bowling honours went to Mian Waqar with 2/23 from a full 7 overs and Matthew Taviani with 3/21 from 5. Jakob Evelyn, Terry Presland, Michael Turner, Nabeel Khan and Mark Lyons  all picked up a wicket each to dismiss Wynnum in the last over. Catches were taken by Amara Chitneni (2), including a beauty coming forward, Taviani, Khaleel Waqar behind the stumps and Lyons who handled a tricky high ball very well. For Wynnum, young Tom Fitzgerald batted well for a fine 62.

In the chase, a partnership of 107 from 136 balls between Turner and Matt Keating provided a crucial platform. Keating, was cautious at first, but then plundered the bowling before being unluckily run out at the non-striker's by a good bit of fielding from the bowler following through. A partnership of 52 from 42 between Turner and Taviani took the Mongrels within 8 of the target. Turner passed 500 for the season in a sparkling innings which accelerated beautifully taking the match away from Wynnum with 11 balls to spare. Well done lads.

Round 8 v Macgregor Maestros

6 December at D M Henderson Upper

Match abandoned.

Round 9 v Griffith University

13 December at Kianawah Park 5

A 12 run loss for the Mongrels today. Oh what it could've been if there had been a full complement. Any game is hard to win with just 10 men.

The bowlers did well, with a depleted field, to restrict GU to 153. Mian Waqar picked up 2, Dave Corrigan, Paul Jonas, Jakob Evelyn and Michael Turner also picked up wickets. Matthew Taviani picked up three catches and a stumping in a tidy performance behind the stumps.

Mongrels batsmen all got off to starts but just couldn't capitalize. Some lusty hitting by Paul Swallow (28) provided hope in the middle order, then a wonderful knock by Waqar (26 from 17 balls) brought the mongrels within striking distance only to fall just short.

That's two narrow losses to GU. There's always next time.

Round 10 v Underdogs

20 December 2014 at Kianawah Park 6

A win by 171 runs to the Mongrels today with run machine, Michael Turner, at it again, taking 137 from 106 balls (685 for the season to date)!

Underdogs were one man short and the Mongrels made them pay, starting with an opening partnership of 138 from 150 balls between Brent Cocker and Turner. There was no respite. When Cocker went for 49, Turner and Skipper Matthew Taviani added 70 from 47 balls in a second wicket partnership. The Mongrels added 99 in the last ten overs to compile a formidable 237 on a field where the grass was as hard to pierce as the fieldsmen.

Underdogs started at a good clip, but Mian Waqar applied the brakes and the wickets with 4/22 from 7 overs. Nabeel Khan and Jakob Evelyn both picked up 2. Evelyn’s two came from the last two balls of the day. Amarasimha Chitneni picked up the important wicket of the Underdogs skipper when an attempted cut took an edge, the keeper's glove and was snapped up by Peter Mitchell at slip. Catches were also taken by Matt Taviani and newbie, James Walton.

A good win to the Mongrels.

Round 11 v Mater Hill

10 and 17 January 2015 at Kianawah Park 6

DAY ONE:

A very good day for the Mongrels today, dismissing Mater Hill for 118 and taking first innings points and a 23 run lead by close of play. Mian Waqar once again took the bowling honours with a sensational 7/31, troubling every batsman. Dave Corrigan, Michael Turner and Paul Jonas picked up a wicket each. Brent Cocker (2), Dylan Comerford, Matt Taviani and Nabeel Khan picked up catches. Mater Hill dismissed in just over 37 overs.

An unbeaten opening partnership of 141 between Cocker (52*) and Turner (61*) from 34 overs, meant that no other Mongrels batsman was needed today. An outright definitely the objective next week.

Come ready and aggressive Mongrels... Well done all.

DAY TWO:

Resuming at 0/141, the Mongrels added a further 110 runs in 17.2 overs at the start of Day Two. The partnership of Michael Turner and Brent Cocker was 161 before Cocker was out for 61. Matt Taviani (50*) joined Turner for a 74 ball, 90 run partnership before the declaration; the evergreen Turner notching yet another unbeaten century.

It was then up to the bowlers to roll Mater Hill on a scorcher of a day. As has been the case regularly this season, Mian Waqar provided the initial breakthrough in the 13th over, via a superb catch by Taviani standing up to the stumps. Sunny also claimed the next two wickets to take his tally to 10 for the match. Not to be outdone, Dave Corrigan got into the action in the 23rd over claiming two wickets in two balls and followed that up with wickets in the 25th and 27th overs. With a wicket to Cocker squeezed in between, Mater Hill were now in a mess with 8 wickets down and only a dozen runs ahead. Sunny wrapped up the tail taking his total to 12 for the match. Catches taken by Khaleel Waqar (2), Cocker and Turner.

Khaleel and James Walton polished off 33 in just 3.3 overs to secure the outright. Yoohoo! Well done lads. Only one wicket lost across two innings.

Round 12 v Wynnum Manly

24 and 31 January 2015 at D M Henderson Upper

An unscheduled one day match was the order of the the day after rain prevented play on Day One. Another dominant batting performance by the Mongrels with partnerships of 117 (84) and 122 (91) for each of the first two wickets. A superb 96 from Brent Cocker anchored the innings. This paved the way for a mammoth 286 from 32 overs when the allotted time expired.

With a thunderstorm looming, the Mongrels moved through their overs quickly, but captured wickets along the way. All six bowlers used took wickets with veteran Paul Jonas  crashing through the top order with three wickets in four overs. Mick Turner also got into the act taking two. Wynnum Manly dismissed in the 19th over. A couple of great catches taken by Brent Cocker at point and by Damien Lewis  with the gloves...Great win lads.

Round 13 v Macgregor Maestros

7 and 14 February 2015 at D M Henderson Upper

DAY ONE:

A pretty high standard of cricket today at DM Henderson Upper between the top 2 teams, the Mongrels and the Maestros. Early loss of wickets had the Mongrels in trouble but Khaleel Waqar and Matt Taviani came to the rescue with a century partnership. Andrew Monley and Rae Sharma bowled beautifully for the Maestros and evergreen Troy Burns also picked up a couple of wickets, thanks to some good outfield catching by Gordon Mathison.

Nav Kahlon and Gordon Mathison added 87 for the first wicket for the Maestros; Nav not bothering too much with singles...

DAY TWO:

A good win to the Maestros today, racking up 290 in reply to the Mongrels 197. Gordon Mathison top scored with 70, the highest score by any player in either innings. A hard fought 50 to Malcolm Lochrie and good contributions down the order saw the Maestros to the total in just over 65 overs. The Mongrels fought hard with wickets shared around. Dave Corrigan, Khaleel Waqar and Kevin Campbell picking up two each. Matthew Taviani picked up four catches behind the stumps. In the Mongrels second innings, Andrew Monley and Rae Sharma were the pick of the bowlers again and had the Mongrels in some trouble before Turner and Taviani added 102 from just 71 balls to stabilise the innings.

Well done all.

Round 14 v Griffith University

21 and 28 February 2015 at Kianawah Park 9

Another unscheduled one-dayer and another tight game between two sides with a lot of respect for each other.

A remarkable double by the Turner phenomenon. A 99 took Turner past 1000 runs for the season and the rage at getting out on 99 spurred Mick to a 4 wicket haul, highlights impossible to top.

The other highlight for this diehard cricket fan was the great over rate by both sides which saw a full 35 overs each within the game time limits.

The Mongrels edged home by 5 runs in a nail-biter.

Well done to all..

Round 15 v Underdogs

7 and 14 March 2015 at Kianawah Park 11

DAY ONE:
A slowish day for the Mongrels v Underdogs on an un-mowed KP11. Some fielders were only visible from the knees up! 😳 Apart from a solid 64 run opening stand between Michael Turner and Matt Keating, there were a few starts made, but no one went on with it. Notwithstanding, the team accumulated 182 runs, with Underdogs 0/28 at the close. 74 overs bowled in the day, including a change of innings and a couple of longer breaks. It can be done.

DAY TWO:

After scoring 182 last week and having Underdogs 0/28 at stumps, the Mongrels wrapped up the match in clinical style on Saturday. Dave Corrigan started the rot with a great spell of bowling and was rewarded with three top order wickets via catches at slip by Matthew Keating and Kevin Campbell, then a top edge, running back at cover, by Matt Taviani. That set the tone for a day of great catching.

Khaleel Waqar grabbed a blinder standing up to the stumps off Kevin Campbell. Corrigan was in the action again accepting a full toss drilled at him at square leg off Cocker, then Keating moved well to his left at slip, to take a beauty, again off Brent Cocker. Matt Taviani, made amazing ground at cow corner to take one off Mick Turner. Mick took a low lofted drive at mid off from the bowling of Chidrup HariduttBhai Shastri, then Charlie wrapped up the innings grabbing a beauty off his own bowling. Nine catches in all for the innings.

The Underdogs were dismissed for 130, and being the end of the season for them, elected not to take the field after tea for the second innings.

Semi-Final v Griffith University

21 and 22 March 2015 at Kianawah Park 11

DAY ONE:

Rain interfered in the Semi Final with only 27 overs bowled on Day One. Griffith were frustrated by a solid 140-run unbeaten opening stand between Brent Cocker and Mick Turner which included 27 boundaries.

DAY TWO:

The heavens opened after only 6.1 overs. Then after about an hour of continuous rain, Griffith conceded.

The Grand Final beckons.

Grand Final v Macgregor Maestros

28 and 29 March 2015 at Kianawah Park 7

What could’ve and should’ve been a very close contest and a great day for both Macgregor teams was unfortunately marred by very poor umpiring.

A fighting 82 capped off a sensational season for Michael Turner and as usual, Mian Waqar bowled beautifully for 2/43 in 20 overs including 5 maidens, but unfortunately for the Mongrels, it was not to be.
Congratulations to the Maestros on a good season.
