2015 Winter Macgregor Mongrels
Round 1 v Numnuts
2 May 2015 at Kianawah Park 12
Match abandoned
Round 2 v Ned’s XI
9 May 2015 at D M Henderson Lower
A first up win to the Mongrels v Ned's XI. Matthew Keating anchored the Mongrels' innings with a fine 62 not out. An 8th wicket, 40 run partnership in 36 balls between Keats and Kevin Campbell was crucial in the context of a 39 run win. Hassan Dar had a day out with 3 wickets and 3 catches. The indefatigable Michael Turner backed up a very good 40 with his best ever bowling figures of 4/13. Matthew Taviani snapped up two stumpings and Mian Waqar was his usual miserly self conceding just 9 runs while taking 3 wickets from 7 overs....good start lads.
Round 3 v Meakin Park Rangers
16 May 2015 at Meakin Sporting Club
A narrow loss to the Mongrels against the big-hitting Meakin Park Rangers. Matthew Keating (65) once again anchored the Mongrels innings and once again featured in a good partnership with Michael Turner (41). Some lusty hitting by David Corrigan (29 from 19) and Khaleel Waqar (17 from 8) saw 64 runs added in the last 8 overs.
The bowling started well, but as usual, MPR threw caution to the wind and amassed 108 in the 17 overs to drinks. Bowling and fielding tightened up in the second half of the innings but the Mongrels were unable to hold off a determined MPR who were led ably by a Captain's knock from Imu Tengere (70no). The Mongrels were left to rue a couple of missed chances, but can be pleased with the fightback which took the game down to the penultimate over, thanks to some fine bowling by Kevin Campbell and Terry Presland at the death.
Round 4 v Toowong
23 May 2015 at D M Henderson Lower
The Mongrels had one of those days yesterday. Bundled out for 78, Toowong smashed the total in just 9 overs. Nothing more to be said...
Round 5 v Griffith University
30 May 2015 at D M Henderson Upper
The Mongrels triumphed over Griffith Uni at D M Henderson Upper on Saturday. Veterans Michael Turner (122 off 94) and Mian Waqar (5/32 off 7) both fired on the same day. Dave Corrigan also blasted 42 from 32 in a whirlwind 81 partnership with Mick in just 10 overs. A good 42 run victory.
Round 6 v Numnuts
6 and 13 June 2015 at Kianawah Park 11
A 50 by Matthew Keating and a fine 59 run 10th wicket partnership between Mian Waqar and Kevin Campbell set up a competitive total of 205. Miserly spells from Sunny and Dave Corrigan on Day one restricted Numnuts to just 2/32 from 14 overs.
On Day 2, Sunny and Dave picked up where they left off, giving nothing away. After 31 overs, Numnuts had inched to just 53. After drinks, Nick Hammond, Naeem Khatree and Hassan Dar demolished the remainder of the Numnuts. The Mongrels taking 8/35 to wrap up the innings in 47.5 overs. Lunch was taken, after which Michael Turner and Khatree plundered the bowling for 70 runs from 9 overs before a declaration.
Sunny was once again the initial destroyer taking 3 wickets in the top order, before Nick Hammond chimed in with a Five fa to bring Numnuts to the brink of an outright defeat. Alas, the last two wickets eluded the Mongrels despite several confident shouts. Good work lads.
Round 7 v Neds XI
20 and 27 June 2015 at Kianawah Park 1
The Mongrels are in a sound position at the end of Day One in their clash against Ned's XI.
Ned's were 8/96 at one point, but some fine batting by skipper, Brayley and good support in the form of 50 partnerships for the 9th and 10th wickets, saw them finish with 200 from 56.3 overs. Mian Waqar once again shone with 5/30 from 16.3 overs including 7 maidens. Sunny found support from Terry Presland with a 3fa, including 2 in an over. Catches were taken by Matthew Taviani (2), Matt Keating and Sunny, while Naeem Khatree picked up a run out and Matt Taviani a stumping.
In reply, Michael Turner and Matthew Keating entertained in the 22 overs to stumps finishing on 0/94. There was no nonsense in the field with good over rates by both teams which saw 78.3 overs bowled in the day. Good work lads!
Despite a 104 opening partnership by Michael Turner and Matthew Keating, the Mongrels capitulated to lose 10/68 and fall short of Ned's first Innings total by 28 runs. Quick wickets to Nick Hammond and Mian Waqar, three of which came via catches behind to Matthew Taviani, gave the Mongrels a chance for an unlikely outright, but Ned's were able to stonewall and finish the day 5/88. Them's the breaks in this silly game we all love.
Round 8 v Meakin Park Rangers
4 and 11 July 2015 at D M Henderson Lower
A very good day for the Mongrels today. After being 7/99, Nick Hammond and Chris Bursey added a run-a-ball 56 run partnership to restore respectability to the score. Chris then guided the tail to add a further 25 valuable runs and post a competitive total against the big-hitting Meakin Park Rangers outfit.
The opening bowling partnership of Nick Hammond and Dave Corrigan tore through the MPR lineup, removing the first 6 batsmen in 13 overs. Bursey and Naeem Khatree picked up the final two wickets; the depleted Rangers lineup all out in 17.1 overs and 0/10 following on.
A good effort in the field with Sabahat Mahmood picking up a catch and Terry Presland taking a pearler at 3rd slip off DC to dismiss the dangerous Junior Akatere. Well done lads. Job half done. Have to push hard next week.
The Mongrels needed just 27 overs to complete a stunning outright victory, by an innings and 22 runs. Nick Hammond added another 5 fa to very good season and although Dave Corrigan went wicketless, the relentless pressure he applied, laid a solid platform for the team. Matthew Taviani (3 catches and a stumping) once again featured in a strong fielding display by the Mongrels with catches also taken by Evelyn and Corrigan.
Good win lads..
Round 9 v Toowong
18 and 25 July 2015 at Balmoral High School
DAY ONE:
The top-of-the-table Mongrels made a great start to their clash against 2nd place Toowong at Balmoral High School today. Mowing, did not appear to make much difference to a very slow outfield which saw many shots pull up short of the boundary. Patient partnerships of 41, 35 and 48 for the first three wickets between Messrs Turner, Keating, Taviani and Presland got the Mongrels off to a good start and good lower order contributions saw the score to 173 which all agree was probably the equivalent of 230/240 on a reasonable surface. The Mongrels made the most of the 50 minutes remaining to bowl, taking 4 wickets; three to the in-form Nic Hammond (catches to Keats and Mick) and the important wicket of Rada to Kevin Campbell, thanks to a great catch by Mark Lyons.
Good work lads. Need to bowl well early next week.
DAY TWO:
The Mongrels wrapped up First Innings Points dismissing Toowong for just 55; 118 runs adrift of the Mongrels first innings. Dave Corrigan and Kevin Campbell bowled beautifully; tying up the batsmen. Kevin finished with 5/19 and Dave 1/2 from 7 overs.
With only 9 men on field at the time, Skipper, Matthew Taviani, elected to not enforce the follow-on. Runs were difficult to come by early in the Mongrels second innings, but after tea, Taviani and Naeem Khatree blazed a 60 run partnership in just 57 balls to put the Mongrels in a strong position. The innings was declared at 126 with approximately 21 overs to bowl. Toowong knuckled down in their second dig and were 5/135 at the close. Special mention to Michael Turner who picked up 5 catches in the match. Barring a massive outright by another team, this win should keep the Mongrels at the top of the table. Good work lads.
Round 10 v Griffith University
1 and 8 August 2015 at D M Henderson Lower
DAY ONE:
The Mongrels started well against Griffith Uni at D M Henderson (Lwr). Wickets were shared in restricting GU to 152. Dave Corrigan bowled beautifully and had all batsman jumping in a couple of fine spells. Nic Hammond was not at his best, but still found a way to pick up wickets. Kevin Campbell and Terry Presland both picked up two in an over. An absolute blinder of a catch by Naeem Khatree at mid on was indicative of a good fielding performance. Matthew Taviani was sharp behind the stumps taking a cracker off a bottom edge keeping up to Kevvie. Nabeel Khan returned from the North to take a sharp chance at point. Mick Turner was his usual reliable self at the top of the order steering the team halfway to the target by stumps. Good work lads. Job half done!
DAY TWO:
Macgregor Mongrels secured first place in B2 South yesterday with a resounding First Innings win over Griffith Uni. Partnerships of 137 between Michael Turner and Naeem Khatree and a run a ball 115 between Naeem and Dave Corrigan took the Mongrels to 6/320 declared in reply to GU's 152. Well done lads.
Numnuts have secured second with a big outright over Meakin Park Rangers. They will play either Neds or Toowong next week.
Grand Final v Neds XI
29 and 30 August 2015 at Kianawah Park 7
DAY ONE:
Some excellent bowling and fielding by the Mongrels on the first day of the Grand Final v Ned's XI. Unsurprisingly, Mian Waqar was a miser, giving up just 23 runs in 18.4 overs while snaring three wickets. Dave Corrigan celebrated the birth of Matilda with three wickets of his own. Naeem Khatree troubled all batsman to grab two including the Ned's skipper caught beautifully down the leg side by counterpart, Matthew Taviani. The opposition could only muster five scoring shots in Kevin Campbell's 9 over spell in which he claimed the wicket of Ned's semi final centurion and the irrepressible Michael Turner also nabbed one from a slick stumping by Taviani, one of four dismissals by the keeper on the day. The match is delicately poised with the Mongrels 0/14 in reply.
DAY TWO:
As expected, in a comp where all 6 teams were very close all season, the GF was a nail-biter. The mongrels fought gallantly, but we're pipped by an enthusiastic Ned's; the margin just 18 runs. Matthew Keating played a sensational stubborn knock against very accurate bowling.
Many thanks to Matthew Windsor and Paul Jonas for their superb organisational skills throughout the year. The Mongrels are pushing hard and getting better all the time. Let's refresh and do one better in the summer. Well done lads....
