Wynnum Manly v South Brisbane

Men’s First Grade Round 9 - Two Day

12 & 19 November 2022 at Bill Albury Oval

Day Two:

Chasing 334 for a First Innings win on a beautiful day at Bill Albury Oval, Wynnum Manly started well with Jordan Kingdon and Brad Radford notching up a 50 partnership in just 38 minutes of play. The next 22 minutes were not so kind. Kingdon was trapped in front by Harmon Sandhu and Corey Hunter lost his stumps to Sandhu on the stroke of Drinks. Radford and Jed Wilson toiled hard for the next 14 overs in the face of some very tight bowling by Sandhu and Dilruwan Perera. Radford brought up a 50 from 80 balls 14 minutes before Lunch but was out seven minutes later, caught at bat-pad by Logan Duval off Perera; Wynnum 3/94 from 34 overs at Lunch.

Having already bowled 27 of the 34 overs for Souths, Sandhu and Perera resumed their miserly bowling after the lunch break. Wilson and Grayson Jones managed a partnership of 35 over 21 overs before Wilson edged Toby Sawyer-Brown to Brandon Faber, again on the stroke of drinks. The run-rate improved after drinks with Perera and Sandhu out of the attack. Jones and Reuben Burger added 42 from 67 but the re-introduction of Perera 23 minutes before Tea, had Jones lofting to mid-on where he was well caught overhead by Connor McMillan. Ali Nasar joined Burger and the pair nursed the Sea-Eagles to Tea at 5/178.

Souths had bowled an amazing 69 overs to the Tea Break; 44 of these by Sandhu and Perera. Skipper Aryan Jain, decided that quick overs of spin was the way to go to bring the New Ball into play as quickly as possible. Burger and Nasar took Wynnum to 211 by Over 80, but when Sandhu was re-introduced in over 81, he broke through immediately - even before the New Ball was taken - Burger cutting, into the hands of Perera at Gully just 7 short of a 50. Jehan Daniel smashed three sixes in his short innings, but was deceived by a Sandhu slower ball and trapped in front - again on the stroke of Drinks; Wynnum 7/233. Jackson Plumb became the 5th Sandhu victim four overs later and all of a sudden it was a matter of survival for Wynnum. 91 overs had already been bowled, but 46 minutes still needed to be negotiated by Nasar and Josh Fraser. Just 9 runs came from the next 93 balls as Souths threw everything at the Wynnum batsmen. Nasar and Fraser remained patient and pictures of concentration throughout. Finally, at 4.59, Nasar’s 130 ball innings came to an end when he edged one from Sawyer-Brown to Faber. Souths needed just one wicket from the last four balls. With every possible batsmen around the bat, Cameron Steinhardt played out the over for a gutsy draw. Fraser remained not out from an important 48 balls.

All credit to Souths for bowling 107 overs for the day!! Sandhu and Perera combined to bowl 68 of these; taking 7 for 126.
