Wanderers v The Southport School

Clyde Veivers Memorial Shield

11 December 2019

The Village Green, Southport

Lunch on the deck at the rowing sheds, looking across the canal to multi million dollar homes. A magnificent super yacht motors by. Yep. That’ll do. A sensational vantage point in the Nathan Sharpe Leadership Stand overlooking a beautiful cricket oval. As far as aesthetics were concerned, TSS had it in spades.

There was also some cricket! The Clyde Veivers Memorial Shield at stake. TSS had been the holders for the last four years, so Wanderers were keen.

Aryan Jain and Scott Palombo looked in charge for 27 from the first 5 overs before Tom Gossett snuck one through Scott. It was Gossett again a few overs later, enticing an edge from Byron Gale into the hands of skipper, Hocart.

With AJ sneakily compiling 39 from just 47 balls, partnerships refused to flourish, reaching double figures and being snuffed out shortly after.

It was Christian Murphy and Josh Kann’s 6th wicket blitz of 69 from 61 balls that took Wanderers to 155 at the second drinks break (34 overs) and set the platform for a large Wanderers total.

Although Josh fell immediately after the break, Christian powered on to a century off 100 balls (the second 50 coming in 25 balls) and propelled Wanderers to 9/251 from 50 overs.

As it had been for Wanderers, TSS partnerships at the head of the innings got started, but were extinguished just as they started to grow. Matt Kennedy was the first to breakthrough taking the first two wickets with the help of catches by James Bazley and Christian Murphy. A sensational catch at short cover by Scott Palombo removed the No.3 to leave TSS 3/62 at Drinks.

It was the Lewis Robinson Show after the break. An edge pouched by keeper Lee Watts in Lewis’ second over and a catch taken by Christian at Mid-off in his fourth. Lewis’ tight bowling and a superb bit of fielding by Scott Palombo led to a run out in Lewis’ 5th over. The show was briefly interrupted by a wicket to James Girolami from his 3rd ball before Lewis returned to pick up the 8th wicket with the score on 98.

A cameo 31 from 17 balls by Conor Murray provided some excitement late in the innings and was brought to an end when a clever field placing had Matt Kennedy on the spot for a boundary catch off Sheldon Stackpoole. James Bazley completed the catch for another Girolami wicket and the innings came to an end in the 38th over for 157.

Pat Carty and Steve Baker paid tribute to Clyde Veivers and the TSS Man of the Match was won by Tom Gossett.

Thank you all for a wonderful day; a great way to end the 2019 year for Wanderers.
