Wanderers v St Patrick’s College
4 December 2019
Curlew Park
Another great day for cricket (when isn’t it? 😉) if not a little warm. A cast of thousands available for Wanderers, but the brilliant Spud made sure everyone had a crack at something. Well done mate.
Gale and Girolami set off at a good pace posting 53 inside 10 overs. Both perished on that score, within 6 balls to bring Michael Toolis and Lewis Robinson together for an undefeated 86 from 87 balls for the 3rd wicket; Toolis blasting his way to 60 from 51 before being “sacked” (retired).
A formidable total loomed as Wanderers cracked 200 at 34th-over-drinks with St Pat’s Old Boy, Luke Stutter combining with Lewis Robinson for 30 from 26, with Todd Anderson for 43 from 36 and with Alan Meincke for 39 from 30, on his way to 50 from 43 balls and his own “sacking” with the score on 253. Alan Meincke followed in retirement after playing great support to Stutter
A Harry Carroll tutorial on “How to hit to leg” contributed 26 from 27 at the end of the innings and a huge 42 sundries, including 25 wides, took Wanderers to within 2 of 300.
The chase was in trouble early as the sure hands of Alan Meincke provided wickets for Lindsay Markham and Palam Singh to have St Pat’s 2/56 at drinks. It was 3/56 one ball later as the ever reliable Byron Gale snapped up another off Palam.
Then followed some quality batting and running between wickets between Sam Jessep and Lachlan Hughesman. A partnership of 188 from 166 balls tortured the Wanderers fieldsmen and ignited St Pat’s hopes for not just a good score, but a win. Jessep was finally out to a juggling catch on the long on boundary by Palam Singh off James Girolami in the 44th over. A Matt Kennedy yorker claimed the 5th wicket in the next over and a direct hit by Palam Singh 7 balls later took care of the 6th.
Meanwhile, Hughesman continued his ruthlessness on wayward deliveries and some of the good ones for that matter, collecting 21 fours and 3 sixes in a 106-ball 148, before he attempted another aggressive two and was caught short by a straight throw from Matt Kennedy to Todd Anderson in the last over.
Although 11 runs came from the last four balls, it was not enough; St Patrick’s falling just 8 runs short in an amazing match.
To James Girolami... if you do bring your “missus” to the cricket, I think scoring 148 is probably a good way to impress. Don’t you think? 🤫🤫😄
Well done to all.
