Wanderers v Brisbane Grammar School
30/11/2020
Northgate Playing Fields No.1
It was the first of four matches scheduled in “cricket week”.
Scorching temperatures everywhere but, at the Northgate playing fields of Brisbane Grammar, a lovely breeze prevailed throughout the day to keep conditions bearable.
Wanderers’ day started poorly when Lucky Peterson was adjudged caught behind with the score on 16 and Steven Page was out caught at slip a few balls later, both off the bowling of Krishna Kangarathan.
Harry Carroll and Tim Agapow recovered, albeit slowly, to take the score to 53 before Carroll broke the golden rule - running on a misfield - and paid the price; Connor Nowlan scoring a direct hit. A few balls later, Agapow met the same fate after a mix-up with Zanden Jeh.
Jeh was joined by Byron Gale, the pair adding 57 in just over 10 overs, before another edge found it’s way to keeper, Matthew Lockhart, to dismiss Jeh with the score on 113, at the 26-over mark.
Spinner, Hugh Couper, copped some “tap” from Gale but got his revenge claiming both Gale (immediately after reaching his 50) and Jack Porter via mistimed shots into the safe hands of Hugo Malone at mid-off.
Nic Coe entertained with a typically dynamic 19 from 16 balls, before becoming one of Connor Nowlan’s three victims at the end the innings. Wanderers all out for 175 from 41 of the allotted 50.
The BGS chase faltered briefly when Matt Love was trapped in front by Coe in the first over bringing Nowlan to the crease. Nowlan’s spectacular stroke play was over much too soon, but not before he had smacked five 4s and a six on his way to 37 and established a solid platform.
Jack Porter’s three quick wickets including Nowlan, brilliantly caught by Agapow at mid-off, brought Wanderers back into the game at 4/48, but that was to be the last glimpse of hope for the visitors as Ethan Bartley and Hugo Couper put the attack to the sword in a fine run-a-ball partnership of 128 for the 5th wicket. Both brought up 50s on the way to victory in the 31st over.
Post-match, Brad Murphy and Patrick Carty paid tribute to the BGS hospitality and the excellent facilities.
A Big Thank you to veteran umpires Richard Rooke-Jones and Ray Marsh.
Well done everyone.
