TSS v Wanderers

Clyde Veivers Memorial Shield

Wednesday 6 December 2023 at Village Green TSS

It seems that any day at the Southport School is glorious and Wednesday 6 December was no exception. Warmish, but a beautiful breeze on hand throughout the day. It was the Phil Tunnicliffe show early. Five fours and four sixes took Tunnicliffe to 52 from 32 balls and the score to 85 before Cameron Sinfield snuck one through him in the 12th over. Ellis McCarthy dealt Luke Tulacz a similar fate in the next over and all of a sudden it was 3/87….Ooohh that number! 😈. Some fine bowling by the TSS spinners restricted Wanderers to just 61 runs from the next 22 overs. Arj Sharma (18) and Saxon Jeh (42) were patient, but eventually perished trying to accelerate the scoring. Darren Collis sparked a revival adding 32 from 17 in partnership with James Kleinschmidt, then skipper, Lee Watts joined Kleinschmidt for 22 from 16 to take Wanderers past 200. Watts explosive 53 not out from 35 balls at the end of the innings steered Wanderers to a very competitive 266. Cameron Sinfield picked up three for the innings and Riley Eckersley two in the final over for TSS.

Wanderers were on top early as Saxon Jeh picked up wickets in the 1st and 7th overs to have TSS 2/10. Tom Brown’s catch off Jonathan Green accounted for the 3rd and Phil Tunnicliffe pouched one of Luke Rowing in the 17th to make it 4/62. The TSS “middle bit” was very impressive. Ishan Sandhu and Gabe Leitch were untroubled by the lack of boundaries and the rising required run-rate and “milked” singles, twos and the odd four in a 22 over partnership. The first 50 of the partnership took 70 balls, but the second 50 came in just 41 as the pair took TSS to drinks at 4/168 from 36 overs. Gabe Leitch’s 50 came from 73 balls a few overs before drinks and Sandhu’s from 59 balls an over after. At the end of the 38th, TSS were 4/186, needing 81 from 12 overs for victory. Phil Tunicliffe was introduced in the 39th and crashed through the defences of both Leitch and Sandhu. TSS 6/187…Ooohh that number! 😈. Lee Watts juggled and held onto one off Zanden Jeh in the next over and it was 7/188. Max Kemp and Cameron Sinfield hit a sparkling 46 from 31 for the 9th wicket to provide a sniff of hope, but a top edge by Kemp off Darren Collis saw Lee Watts get under it and take the catch and the very next ball, Collis gathered and through to Phil Tunnicliffe from mid-on to complete a run out and it was all over. Wanderers home by 25 runs.

Steve Baker regaled the teams and supporters with stories of the inimitable Clyde Veivers and the Clyde Veivers memorial shield was presented to Wanderers skipper Lee Watts for the first time since 2019.

A big Thank you to The Southport School for their excellent hospitality and continuing support of the Wanderers club.
