18 March 2025 at St Paul’s School Bald Hills

About Wanderers…

Wanderers was formed in Queensland during 1933 by the then Governor of Queensland, Sir Leslie Wilson, with the aim to encourage young people to play and enjoy the game of cricket. Today the Club plays mid-week matches each Summer, mostly against schools in the State's south-east, and undertakes an annual 10-12 day playing and coaching tour of country centres. Tours in recent years have taken Wanderers west to Eromanga, South to Yetman and North to Charters Towers.
The Club relies upon its own fund-raising resources and sponsors to finance its activities including supporting youngsters in coaching clinics and on tours.
The 2025 Wanderers Tour will depart Brisbane on Wednesday Aug 13th ( Ekka Public Holiday ) and return on the afternoon of Sunday 24th . Junior coaching & 40/50 over fixtures in Yeppoon, Rockhampton, Mackay, Proserpine, Bowen, Home Hill, Clermont, Wide Bay region will take place along the way. This will be a great tour. Players, umpires & most definitely supporters are very welcome!

A windy and overcast day with a hint of autumn in it, greeted Wanderers for their last scheduled match of the season at St Paul’s School Bald Hills.

Harry Friend and Prince Lucky opened the batting for the visitors, getting off to a rollicking start with 32 from the first 6 overs. A boundary to Lucky in Guru Behl’s 3rd over was followed by a top-edge skyer, expertly pouched by Ryan Merritt at point. Chris Leonard joined Friend to add a run-a-ball 35 for the second wicket, but was out in Max Herring’s first over, caught at point, this time by skipper, Fraser Johnson. The visitors looked comfortable at 2/75 from 13 with Friend on 30, striking at 100, but an LBW to Fraser Johnson right on drinks and a second catch to Merritt in Karm Vaghani’s first over immediately after, reduced Wanderers to 4/107.

Friend was still there however, bringing up 50 from 45 balls in the 17th and adding 37 from 37 with Corey Hogan for the 5th wicket. Vaghani ended the partnership, picking up Hogan via a fine Oliver Rauchle effort at slip in the 23rd. Friend continue to defy the attack taking control in a 44 run partnership with Zeel Bodar for the 6th wicket. Rauchle was again in the action when he enticed Bodar to lob one to Guru Behl at cover in the 32nd. An over late, Bipin Mistry’s attempt to get off the mark, was thwarted by a straight throw by Johnson to Eddie Bird and it was 7/183 at drinks.

Once again, a wicket fell immediately after the break; Caderyn Barthelson becoming Vaghani’s 3rd victim. Harry Friend soldiered on to complete a fine century (96 balls; 8 fours and 4 sixes) a few balls later. Chris Tuesley hung on doggedly in an innings high partnership of 47 from 57 for the 9th wicket, succumbing to a well-judged catch by Ryan Brand off Guru Behl in the 42nd over. Skipper, Sheldon Stackpoole held on just long enough for Harry Friend to notch up an amazing 150 not out from 132 balls (13 fours and 7 sixes), before becoming Behl’s 3rd victim. Wanderers all out for 246 in the 45th over.

In the chase, St Paul’s lost Patrick Hughes in the last over before lunch and unfortunately caught the “wicket-after-a-break” disease as Max Herring became Corey Hogan’s second scalp soon after the resumption. Zeel Bodar’ introduction in the 11th brought two wickets in the over, with Hogan still in the action, taking the catch just behind square. Oliver Rauchle and Sohail Rahiman provided resistance for a while, but James Cusack broke through in the 18th; Harry Friend accepting a lofted drive at shortish mid-wicket. From 5/50, despite a belligerent 31 from 32 from Rauchle, St Paul’s lost 6/32 over the next 8 overs to be all out for 82. Prince Lucky grabbed a match-best 4/21 from 4 overs, while Om Bhikadiya finished with 2/4 from 2.4. Hogan also featured in the field with 2/8 and three catches.

A most enjoyable day. It was a pleasure to have a crowd of St Paul’s supporters on hand just before the lunch break.

Many thanks to Andrew Thomas (“AT”) for organising the event and a special thanks to St Paul’s staff for providing a sumptuous lunch, featuring a to-die-for “frog in a pond” dessert. 😋😋; very much appreciated by all participants.
