Allan Pettigrew Shield 2020/21

Round 19

27 February & 6 March 2021

Ian Healy Oval

DAY ONE:

No doubt the facilities at Shaw Park are the envy of all the Queensland Premier Cricket Clubs. Lighting on all fields, a revamped Alan Pettigrew Oval, turf practice wickets, a beautiful club house.... a pity, it takes a Civil Engineer and two days notice to adjust the sight screen...🤭

After electing to bat, a good opening stand of 35 was brought undone by the drinks break; Alexander Robynson falling just three balls after.

Honeybrook joined Corbin Zeller to steer Souths to lunch without further loss, but was out two overs after the break, to make it 2/68. An aggressive Trent Pearce contributed 29 of the 37-run, 3rd wicket partnership before meeting his downfall just a few balls after Zeller brought up a well-deserved 50 from 114 balls.

Harry Jones and Zeller negotiated the next drinks break and clocked up a 50 partnership before Jones was dismissed on the stroke of Tea with the score on 152. The last session was dominated by an excellent 89-run partnership between Zeller and Brendan James. 38 runs came from the first ten overs after Tea as well as Zeller's century from 205 balls. From there, the scoring accelerated with 51 from the next ten overs leading up to Zeller's dismissal for a classy 126.

With the score 5/245 with 13 overs left to play, the bonus point at 275 was definitely achievable, but a McNae 50 could not prevent the cricket gods from intervening as the last 5 wickets fell for just 29; the BP eluding Souths for the second successive match.

DAY TWO:

Was that the mower still circling the outfield an hour before the start of play and the heavy roller flattening the wicket? Surely not! 🤦🏼

With a back complaint preventing Brendan James from bowling more than three overs in the morning session, Souths bowlers stuck to their guns restricting Norths to 70 from 33 overs in the first session. Toby Brown claimed the sole wicket of the morning when sub-fielder, Peter Strain, held onto a scorcher at mid-off.

The second session was similarly tight with 78 runs coming from the 33 overs bowled. Arlen Wells-Peris bowled most of these, completing a marathon 20 over spell. His 10th over saw the only wicket of the session when he got under a mis-timed shot off his own bowling.

The Norths batsmen were resolute, as well as a little lucky with a few chances grassed during the day. The third breakthrough finally came in the 79th over when a pull shot was drilled directly at Dominic Coote at short mid-wicket, off the bowling of Trent Pearce to make it 3/185.

Trailing by 80, with 13 overs to go and 7 wickets in hand, Norths put the foot down. James McPherson brought up a century from 232 balls and was out shortly after to a diving catch by Ollie Anderson off the bowling of Sawyer-Brown.

A couple of sixes in the final over of the day saw Norths home for first innings and unfortunately, the end of the season for Souths.

A pleasure scoring for you lads. I hope you have enjoyed the write-ups.
