South Brisbane v Gold Coast - U19

U19 Men’s One Day Competition

Round 5

7 February 2021 at Bill Pippen Oval

Final round, top two teams, place in the final beckoning; the scene was set for a tough clash. Joe Rangiah won the toss and decided to post a target on a hot day.

The loss of Blake D Muller in the second over was not the ideal start, but Aaron Joby and Joshua Schaumburg rebuilt nicely in a 49 run, 2nd wicket partnership.

Boundaries were hard to come by due to careful field placings, backed up by excellent fielding. However, Schaumburg found a way with a mix of good cricket shots and a hint of innovation. Schaumburg’s 50 came up off 74 balls in the 23rd over.

A hard running Dylan Crees provided solid support in a 76 run 3rd wicket partnership as did Justin Faber, Rangiah and Ali Nasar who saw Schaumburg to what seemed a pre-destined century in the 40th over from 121 balls.

Schaumburg’s eventual 123 from 139 balls included 13 of the 16 boundaries in the innings, steering Souths to a creditable 232 from their allocated 50 overs.

In the chase, Gold Coast were solid early, posting an opening stand of 57 before some hiccups brought about by Connor McMillan. Three wickets fell between overs 15 and 21 with Nic Golding on hand to take a couple of catches.

From 3/69, Gold Coast fought back in a dominant 4th wicket stand of 123 from 110 balls between skipper Hugo Burdon and Bailey Sewell. This was a masterclass in running between wickets. Fielders were under constant pressure as runs were “stolen” at every opportunity.

When Sewell was eventually out for 49, McMillan’s 4th victim caught by Will Storrs, just 41 runs were needed from 12 overs.

Although a McMillan catch in a Joby wicket maiden (😳), interrupted proceedings, just 7.4 of the 12 overs were needed for Gold Coast to achieve the target; Burdon finishing on a classy 89 not out from 83 balls.

Disappointment on the day but well done to all the lads on a strong season.
