South Brisbane v Western Suburbs - 3rd Grade
Norm McMahon Shield 2021/22
Round 5
20 and 27 November 2021 at Graceville Memorial Park 2
DAY ONE:
A very warm day at Graceville, but Wests skipper, Harry Borger, saw something in the wicket and elected to bowl. With two wickets back in the shed inside nine overs, the decision looked a good one, but Matthew Taviani and Peter Strain had other ideas. The pair dug in, patiently negotiating the predominantly wide-of-the-stumps attack for 30 overs in an 89-run 3rd wicket partnership. On the way, Taviani brought up a defiant 50 from 89 balls in 134 minutes. A tickle to the keeper, Nick Lahy, three overs before Tea ended the 109 minute partnership; Souths going to Tea at 3/123.
After Tea it was a catastrophe! Wests seamer, Jonathan Allcock and off-spinner, Toby Matthews took the remain seven wickets for just 23 runs in 17.2 overs; Allcock delivering seven consecutive maidens during the session. Peter Strain battled to 50 from 141 balls, but was out soon after, in the middle of a horror spell where 4 wickets fell in 11 balls without a run added.
Conditions had completely changed when the Wests innings began at 4.35pm. Overcast conditions, a stiffer breeze and significantly cooler. Some short bowling early meant Wests got off to a flyer, adding 34, without loss, from the first eight. Umhar Samsudeen entered the fray and the brakes were applied. In the next six overs, Umhar and Nic Golding conceded just five runs. The pressure eventually told in the final over of the day, when Noah Vojinov trapped the opener in front, not offering a shot; Wests ending the day 1/49, 97 runs behind.
DAY TWO:
Play not possible due to ground conditions after heavy rain.
