South Brisbane v Sandgate/Redcliffe - 2nd Grade

Allan Pettigrew Shield - Round 18

19 and 26 February 2022 at Trevor Hohns Field

DAY ONE

There was some cloud but an otherwise clear day with a light breeze at Sandgate on Saturday. After winning the toss and batting, Sandgate were in trouble early when an edge off Nic Golding was well taken at slip by Lachie Peterson in the third over. Matt Casey struck three balls later via a sharp catch up to the stumps by Matt Taviani and again in his next over when another edge was snapped up beautifully by Hiruna Sigera at slip. Sandgate' s Dan Fielding and Jackson Sweeney ground out the next 19 overs of probing bowling by Golding, Casey and Lachlan Newland. It was Newland who broke through in the 25th over when Sweeney edged to Taviani off the second ball and the new batsman was trapped LBW off the next. The hat-trick was avoided and Sandgate limped to lunch at 5/41 from 31 overs.

Just 11 runs had been added after lunch when a slick stumping by Taviani off Smit Mehta and a catch at bat-pad by Liam O’Hare off Mehta 11 balls later reduced Sandgate to 7/58. Connor Weal then combined with the stubborn Fielding to add 31 from the next 10 overs, before Mehta struck again in the 52nd over, removing both batsman from successive balls, via the safe hands of Trent Pearce and Hiruna Sigera. Nicholas Scherer and Brad Ilott held out for a 23-run 10th wicket partnership before a Trent Pearce quicker ball got through Scherer’s defences and Sandgate were all out for 112.

With a minimum of 37 overs to be bowled, Peterson and O’Hare started cautiously taking Souths to drinks without loss at 0/33 from 17 overs. The first wicket came in the 22nd over when Ilott snuck one through Peterson. Four overs later, Ilott struck again when a faint edge by Newland found the keeper’s gloves. With eleven overs to go and the score 2/54, the switch was flicked. 25 came from the next five overs, before Trent Pearce was deceived and had his stumps disturbed. Having taken 88 balls to get to 23, O’Hare launched into the bowling taking 27 off his next 17 balls to bring up a 50, then securing first innings points with a six from the first ball of the penultimate over. O’Hare found a willing partner in Hiruna Sigera, the pair blasting 41 from 30 balls then playing out a maiden to end the day on 3/120.
