Sandgate v Wynnum Manly Gold

Veterans Over 40

30 July 2023 at Trevor Barsby Oval

There are not many better winter days than the one on offer at Trevor Barsby Oval on Sunday. Short a player early, Wynnum skipper Justin Poole, “won the toss” and elected to bat.

Wynnum struggled to the drinks break at 3/50 from 17 overs thanks to some very tight bowling by Aaron Dixon (2/18) and Tony O’Connell (1/18). Then, two wickets in three overs to Mark Dalmazzo after drinks, made it 5/66 from 20. Jon Shaw (47) and Harry Stavarakis (22) staged a middle order revival; adding 55 from 54 and taking Wynnum to 5/121 with seven overs to go. Unfortunately, there was no more joy as Drew McMillan (2/24) and Liam Price (3/23) picked up the final 5 wickets in just 13 balls to pull Wynnum up at 134.

The boundaries were large and 134 may have really been 150/160, but that made no difference to the Sandgate batsmen. Jon Isoardi and Andrew Francey got off to a rollicking start, running five 3s in the first 5 overs, before Isoardi chipped one to Stone at square leg off the bowling of Jon Shaw to make it 1/30 in the 7th. Trevor Irvine joined Francey for a decisive partnership of 64 from 84 balls, before Francey reached 50 and retired in the 21st over. Irvine went on to 39 before clipping one to Justin Poole at cover off the bowling of Steen Carlson. The remaining 19 runs were polished off over the next few overs; Sandgate victorious by 7 wickets.

There’s a fair bit of congestion at the top of the table with five teams on three wins apiece, making the final round crucial for semi-final qualification.

Big thanks to the Sandgate lads for arranging a spot of lunch.
