Queensland XI v Netherlands Game 2
T20 World Cup Warm-ups
Thursday 6 October 2022 at Norman Gray Oval
Netherlands returned to Souths on Thursday 6 October for 2 matches against a Queensland XI and the weather.
The Netherlands won the toss and having had a crack at batting first on Tuesday, decided to have a crack at bowling first. Josh Brown and Max Bryant got off to a flyer, taking 22 from the first two overs before Josh Brown got a top edge off Pringle and was caught at mid-on by Roelof Van Der Merwe. Sam Heazlett couldn’t believe his luck in the next over when he smacked a short ball from Bas De Leede down the throat of Shariz Ahmad on the square leg boundary. Sam Truloff and Max Bryant worked hard over the next 8 overs to compile a partnership of 60 from 54 balls and take Queensland XI to 2/95 with eight overs remaining. With wickets in hand 160/170 was on the cards, but Netherlands fought back. Truloff attempted to hit Pringle out of the ground and was caught at wide mid-on by Tom Cooper in the 13th. Sharis Ahmad snuck one through to rattle Hugo Burdon’s stumps in the 14th. Max Bryant reached 50 and was again out immediately after - again LBW - this time to Pringle in the 15th. Leigh Drennan hooked one in the air off Brandon Glover and was caught by Pringle at Fine Leg in the 16th and Tom Whitney got a leading edge off Fred Klassen and was caught by Ahmad at gully; making it 5/23 in five overs. Bryce Street took 10 off the 18th over from Brandon Glover and five from the first three of the next by Klassen to advance the score to 135. With 9 balls to go, Liam Guthrie top-edged Klassen and was well caught by keeper, Scott Edwards running back. Logan Van Beek’s last over was wayward with five wides, 2 byes and a leg bye coming from it. The penultimate delivery was a straight one and it got through Street to disturb the furniture; Queensland XI finishing at 9/147.
Stephan Myburg smashed a four from the second-last ball of the first over and was sensationally caught by a diving Bryce Street off the next ball to make it 1/6 in the chase. It was 2/6 one ball later when O’Dowd got an edge to a Tom Whitney delivery and Drennan gloved cleanly. Tom Cooper looked in great touch from the outset, smacking 10 from his first five deliveries. Bas De Leede stay ended in the 4th over when he lofted Zanden Jeh into the waiting hands of Tom Whitney at long off. Cooper continued on his merry way taking 18 from the 5th over and advancing to 29 out of a team total of 37. Jeh struck again in the 6th when Sharis Ahmad attempted a sweep and it popped up to be caught by Drennan. Scott Edwards joined Cooper adding 18 in a partnership of 44 during which Cooper brought up 50 in 28 balls. Edwards was out in the 13th paddling one to Tom Whitney at short fine off Sam Heazlett. Cooper found another willing partner in Roelof Van der Merwe. Van der Merwe was the perfect foil, feeding Cooper the strike as he blasted his way to a dominant 98 from 55 and a Netherlands victory in 18.2 overs
