Round 1 - 30 April 2022 at DM Henderson Lower

Report by Alex Mainey

Game 1 match report

First game of the season started on a high note with Duncan awarding the Jonas and Sargent-Taviani medals. A fantastic inititiave and on-goining tradition that has been established.

Alex’s three consecutive toss wins from the T20 carnival came to an end with Red Dogs winning the toss and electing to bat. Duncan and Sarge (0/20 – 6 ov) opened the bowling providing a high level of control and combined with some tight fielding, put the pressure onto the batsmen. Mitch (2/32 – 8 ov) took advantage of the pressure picking up 2 early wickets. Milo (2/18 – 3.2 ov) followed Mitch and had an impressive debut for the Mongrels picking up two wickets in his second over to have the opposition 4/65 from 17 overs. From then onwards, two brothers from Red dogs combined nicely, running well between the wickets and picking up the occasional boundary. It took a re-introdcution of Duncan (2/29 – 8 ov) to break the 105 run partnership. The Red dogs then closed out the innings losing a few more wickets but adding a few runs, 7/189 (40 ovs).

The new season for the Mongrels brought on a new opening partnership in Suthin and Jack (29). They combined nicely before Suthin fell for 37 (34 balls) with the score at 70 and Macgregor needing 5.5 runs per over. The Red Dog spinners slowed down the scoring rate and the Mongrel batsmen found it difficult to lift the run rate losing wickets at regular intervals as the required run rate kept rising. Eroll (16), Alex (25), Mitch (16) and Duncan (7) provided some hope however we couldn’t convert our starts. Macgregor Mongrels closed their innings at 9/162 from the 40 overs. Red Dogs winning by 27 runs.

Overall, 8 no balls are far too many in a game and their top scorer gave three very very tough chances and if any one of them miraculously stuck, the target could have only been 150-160 and we have a very different game on our hands. It was great to be out on the field again and if we play like we did this weekend, we will have a very good season

Many thanks to our supporters on the day, Gian (who graciously scored for us), PJ, Lisa and Steve.
