Brookfield United v Brisbane Redbacks
Warehouse Sunday A1 - 50 Overs - Round 3
8 June 2025 at George Watt Oval
One feels that a day so glorious, especially in light of the dismal conditions to date this season, deserves some commentary as accompaniment.
Redbacks called successfully and elected to bat first. Matt Taviani set the tone for Brookfield; capturing a wicket in his first over from a rank half-tracker spooned to Parag Joshi at Point. Bowling difficult-to-get-away-dibbly-dobblers, Taviani picked up a second in the 8th over, when a top edge went straight up; the catch gleefully accepted by WK, Jack Thompson. Ring-in, Matt Olyott, capitalised on batter impatience maintaining a full length which was rewarded with wickets in his 4th, 5th and 6th overs; all bowled - Redbacks 5/69 at Drinks.
Taviani’s variation in pace did for Redbacks skipper Reddy, just 5 balls after the break to make it 6/69. Aakash and GVD added some respectability to the Redbacks score compiling38 from 47 for the 7th wicket before Matt Shipp accepted a return catch for his first wicket in the 26th over. Shipp struck again in the 30th when Liam Bahemia took a catch at cover and Redbacks were 8/136 at the second Drinks break.
It took just 12 balls to wrap up the innings; Shipp claiming both remaining wickets in his 8th over to finish with 4/20; the two “spinners” combining for 18-7-7-36 from the southern end.
Matt Taviani and Jakob Evelyn set a solid platform for the chase with an opening partnership of 67; Taviani trapped in front on 46 right on drinks. Evelyn and Bahemia added 32 for the 2nd wicket before Bahemia skyed one for the keeper to complete; 2/99. Evelyn’s 105m stay at the crease came to an end in the 30th over, when a shooter trapped him in front; 3/105.
That was it for Redbacks as Parag Joshi and evergreen, Brett Shipp, steered Brookfield toward the target in a 4th wicket stand of 38 from 9 overs.
A most enjoyable day under wonderful blue skies!
