BGS v Wanderers
4 December 2024 at BGS Northgate Playing Fields Main Oval
Wanderers was formed in Queensland during 1933 by the then Governor of Queensland, Sir Leslie Wilson, with the aim to encourage young people to play and enjoy the game of cricket. Today the Club plays mid-week matches each Summer, mostly against schools in the State's south-east, and undertakes an annual 10-12 day playing and coaching tour of country centres. Tours in recent years have taken Wanderers west to Eromanga, South to Yetman and North to Charters Towers.
The Club relies upon its own fund-raising resources and sponsors to finance its activities including supporting youngsters in coaching clinics and on tours.
In August 2023, the Wanderers Annual Tour took in Goondiwindi, St George, Roma, Tambo, Barcaldine, Emerald and Springsure. The 2024 tour headed west to Quilpie, via Bowenville, Mitchell and Charleville, then looped back via Cunnamulla, St George, Thallon and Warwick.
Apart from the cricket, the tourists were edified by stops at various country pubs and tourist attractions. If you are a cricketer, golfer, lawn bowler or just an avid observer/supporter, please visit the Wanderers Club QLD Inc. Facebook page and register your interest for the 2025 tour; details to come.
Hot, Humid, Overcast, Sunny, Nice Breeze…. all these on one day at BGS Northgate Playing Fields. As always the Oval and deck were immaculately turned out…. a perfect day for cricket.
Jordan Kingdon and Aaron Joby faced some tight and determined bowling by openers Hayden Dalmazzo and Harry Langdon at the outset, but survived intact to take Wanderers to drinks at 0/63 from 15. After drinks, Joby brought up 50 and the partnership rose to 104 from 23 overs before both batters were called back to the sheds. Sam Geyer and Eddie Comer assumed the mantle adding 41 from just over 9 overs before Geyer was caught on the boundary by Alastair Langdon in Brodie Martin’s first over. 8 balls later it was 2/159 when Cruz Baker enticed Douglas to hit out into the waiting hands of Rishi Mehta at long off. After “marking time” for a run-a-ball 20, Comer exploded into action taking 40 from his next 20 balls and pushing the score to 192 before becoming Baker’s second victim in the 39th over. Mitch Rowing and Kobie Richmond added 28 from 26 before the former magnanimously retired: Richmond continuing at a run-a-ball to guide Wanderers to a sound 242 from their allocated 45.
In the chase, a bizarre 11-ball opening over by Richmond had just about everything, including the wicket of Will Driessen. Richmond’s next was not as eventful and by his 3rd and 4th he had settled well enough to pick up another two BGS wickets and the figures of 3/17 from 5 overs. Oliver Dauber and Cruz Baker steadied the ship with patient 32 from 69 before Joby latched onto one, just after drinks, off Luke Rowing, to make it 4/69. Rowing went on to a very tidy 1/22 from 8 overs. Armaan Timblo joined Cruz Baker in a stunning run-a-ball 5th wicket partnership of 48 which featured some exciting running between wickets. Baker brought up a 50 from just 58 balls but was out soon after to a very good catch coming forward by Ben Ferguson at mid-on. The excitement and stellar running continued as Hayden Dalmazzo joined Timblo at the crease. With the asking rate 7 and over, the pair patiently built their partnership, seeing off some wily spin bowling by Ben Ferguson and Prince Lucky. The 50 partnership came up in 66 balls and seemed the signal to kick things up a gear. The next 50 came in just 38 balls. Then with the partnership on 107 from 108 and 19 to get from 9 balls, Eddie Comer broke through dismissing Timblo for a sparkling 72 from 82 balls. A gallant Dalmazzo brought up his 50 in the final over, but it was not to be; Wanderers home by just 4 runs.
A very exciting day for all.
