QVC Over 40s Trial

Team Poole v Team Irvine

9 July 2023 at Ivor Marsden No. 2

The second of two weekend trial games (45 overs) took place under sunny winter skies at Ivor Marsden Oval. Team Irvine “won the toss” and elected to bat in the 45 over encounter.

A Justin Poole screamer at short cover off Tim MacDonald provided the first wicket of the day in the 4th over. Steen Carlson picked up a wicket from his second ball when Jon Shaw was trapped in front and a second wicket to MacDonald made it 3/43 after 10 overs. Skipper Trevor Irvine and Dale Hansen then guided Team Irvine to 70 without further loss at the first Drinks break.

After drinks, The Irvine/Hansen partnership reached 50 before Amila Weththasinghe struck; sneaking one through Irvine’s defence in his second over and trapping Ben Daley in front in his third, to make it 5/123. Having added 53 in just 4 overs, the run rate then eased a little and this was followed by a flurry of wickets. Steen Carlson picked up his second and third wickets and Alan Rowe was on a hat trick as Team Irvine lost 4 wickets in 18 balls to be 9/159 in the 29th.

After the second drinks break, wickets continued to tumble. Keeper Brad Townsend finished with three dismissals; Luke Jackson three catches and Tim MacDonald picked up a third wicket as Team Irvine added 5/50 in the last 15 overs.

The target was 217 and that seemed a long way away when Luke Jackson shouldered arms to Brett Burke and was trapped in front first ball. 1/0 became 2/2 when Burke snuck one through Rowe in his next over. Steven Page and Steen Carlson then steadied the ship adding 73 from 81, before Carlson retired just after drinks for a well made 33 from 40.

MacDonald joined Page for a better than run-a-ball 53 run partnership leading to Page’s retirement (35 from 64) at the end of the 24th with the score on 128. MacDonald’s retirement came three overs later having made 42 from 37. The third wicket finally came in the 28th when Matt McLeod was trapped in front by Craig Mackay; Team Poole 3/164 at drinks.

Skipper Irvine claimed a bit of revenge on Weththasinghe trapping him in front in the 33rd and a direct hit by Brett Burke in the 40th caught Steve Sammutt out of his ground. Team Poole nevertheless coasted to victory in the 44th over.

It was veritable veterans’ extravaganza at Ivor Marsden with Queensland also taking on Tassie in Over 50s and Over 55s.

Well done to all.
